January 28 - End of 2nd quarter/1st Semester - Full School Day
-
January 29 - Teacher Workday (No School for Students)
KJMS Families,
Thank you for patience this week as we worked through the issues with our building. The students and staff did an excellent job following our safety protocols!
The first semester ends on Tuesday (1/28) and students do not have school on Wednesday (1/29). Second semester schedules will be visible in SIS starting at 4:00pm on Wednesday (1/29).
All FCPS families and middle and high school students have received an invitation to participate in a survey about FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R), cell phone policy, and cell phone storage options. The survey will be available through Monday, February 3. Please take a few moments to share your feedback and help FCPS make informed, inclusive decisions for all of our schools!
Enjoy the weekend and Go Commanders!

Food For Neighbors held their first RED bag event at KJMS to benefit KJMS and FHS families this past Saturday. Without all of your support, we could not have reached the level of success we had at our very first Red Bag Day at KJMS. Thank you to all the volunteers and donors for the Red Bag Event.
The Fairfax Area Team collected 120 Red Bags, totaling 1,669 pounds of food and toiletries! What an amazing way to kick off our 10th sorting site! As a whole, FFN collected 2138 Bags, totaling 27,110 pounds. WOW!! 🤩
The next RED BAG EVENT is March 8th. Feel free to reach out for a Red Bag, or join us at KJMS to volunteer. https://www.foodforneighbors.org/get-involved/request-a-bag/
To promote healthy technology habits and encourage meaningful learning experiences, we will be holding two "Digital Detox Days" on February 28th and March 3rd. On these days, all classroom activities will be conducted without the use of student laptops. Students may still bring their laptops to school if they need to use it for after-school activities, but they will remain in their backpacks during the school day.
We recognize that our students spend a significant amount of time interacting with technology. These Digital Detox Days aim to:
-
Inspire good Digital Citizenship: By stepping away from screens, students will gain a deeper appreciation for the balance between technology and offline activities.
-
Reinforce offline learning: These days will remind us that technology is a tool, and meaningful learning can still be achieved through traditional methods like discussions, hands-on activities, and creative projects.
We believe these days will be a valuable opportunity for both students and teachers to explore alternative learning approaches and foster a deeper connection with their studies!

If you have not been able to attend a Community Boundary Review meeting yet, it’s not too late! The following virtual meetings will have the same format and information available as the previous in-person meetings:
Click one of the dates above to register and receive your unique Zoom link. Please note that each virtual meeting will be capped at 400 participants to help provide a meaningful experience for all. Language interpretation will be available. Learn about FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.
This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report. The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.
Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. They will be distributed by schools this month to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE.
The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our schools and staff are committed to working with families to support every student to succeed at their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS.
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.
At KJMS we are looking for artifacts to display in our Equity Showcase. Please bring any items you may have to the KJMS front office, and it will be returned in March. Showcase is locked so the items will be safe and secure. Please contact Faiza Alam at FAlam@fcps.edu for any question.
Thanks in advance for sharing the valuable items.

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.
What can families do?
- Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
- Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
- Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage.
- Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
- Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”
