Exciting Opportunity! Join the Girls on the Run Program: Coaches Needed!

Dear SLES Community

We are thrilled to announce that the Girls on the Run program is coming to us this Spring. Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization designed to empower girls by using running as a tool to build social, emotional, and physical skills through interactive lessons and activities and ends with a celebratory 5K race at the end of the season. It is considered more than just a running program, focusing on life skills development through a supportive community environment.

The program will be held after school at Stratford Landing Elementary and we are seeking volunteers to join us as coaches for the upcoming season. Practices will be held twice a week for one hour each day. Ideally, we’d love to have 4-6 coaches. If you’re only available for one practice day instead of two, our site coordinator can work with you (coaches can be assigned to one practice day and another set of coaches assigned to the other practice day).

Season Details:

March 3rd-May 19th

  • 4:15-5:15pm on Monday and Tuesday. Please note these practice days are still tentative
  • 5K Weekend: May 17 or 18 (dates and locations are tentative)

If you’re interested in becoming a coach for the upcoming season, reach out to Michelle Jones, our site coordinator and former SLES teacher. Please contact her by January 28th with your interest and details. Below is her contact information:

Thank you for considering this opportunity to support our SLES students!

Best,

Michelle Jones

Winter Weather

Please watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made. FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing or food, please contact our family liaison below:

You can also call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

Student Cell Phone Use and Family Texts

As a reminder, FCPS has an off and away cell phone policy. Additionally, Smartwatches with texting features should be disabled during the school day. Families should not text their child during the school day. Please, we need your help and support enforcing our policy. In some instances, families are texting information, such as how a child should dismiss and go home, to their child and not communicating with our front office. This can create confusion for our staff during school dismissal and can impact student safety. Please adhere to FCPS policy and do not text your child during the school day. Share with your child there should be not text communication from them during the school day. Families should contact the front office with any emergencies or if you have a need to connect with your child during the school day. It is important this policy is followed.
