Message from Dr. Khoshaba
Greetings, SoCo family,
Despite facing several days of delayed openings due to the extremely low temperatures, our Stallions didn’t miss a beat and had a busy week filled with incredible experiences for both students and staff. Just like true Stallions, we persist and push forward, even when the hurdles in our path seem especially tall. From engaging classroom activities to exciting extracurricular events, our school community continues to thrive and make the most of every opportunity!
Let’s get to this week’s reflections.
Student Belonging
An Evening of Honor: NHS Inductions Await!
We are eagerly anticipating the upcoming National Honor Society Inductions, taking place on February 5, 2025, at 7 PM in the auditorium. It will be a night full of excellence, inspiration, and celebration as we recognize our outstanding students for their dedication to scholarship, leadership, service, and character. This special event not only honors their hard work and commitment but also highlights the values that make our Stallion community so exceptional. We look forward to seeing families, friends, and faculty come together to support and applaud our newest inductees!
High Quality Instruction
This week, I had the opportunity to observe several classes, but one that stood out was Mr. Molina’s multi-language learners’ social studies class—a course I don’t often get the chance to visit. Coming off Monday’s holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mr. Molina did a superb job guiding students through meaningful academic conversations about Dr. King’s legacy. The class was highly engaged as they watched a brief yet powerful clip of the iconic I Have a Dream speech, followed by thoughtful reflections on his lasting impact on our country and the world. It was inspiring to see students of diverse linguistic backgrounds actively participating and sharing their perspectives with confidence. Way to go, Mr. Molina—when it comes to teaching, language barriers don't stand a chance!
School Culture
Speed, Strength, and Stallion Pride!
Our girls’ track team had an outstanding showing at the VA Showcase last weekend, which is one of the biggest meets in the country featuring top teams from across the U.S. and Jamaica. Mianna Mason led the way with remarkable performances, setting new school records and achieving top national rankings in multiple events. She clocked an impressive 6.89 seconds in the 55m dash (US #5) and 7.77 seconds in the 55m hurdles (US #4), while also breaking the long jump school record with a leap of 20’ 0.75” (US #5), surpassing Felicia Majors’ 2013 mark. The girls 4x200m relay team, consisting of Mianna Mason, Catalina Sanchious, Julia Wallace, and Cameron Thompson, delivered a phenomenal performance, finishing in 1:37.48 (US #2), setting another new school record. Their efforts placed them second overall, right behind the powerhouse Bullis School from Maryland, with Hydel, a team from Jamaica, securing third.
Blazing the Track, Breaking Records!
The boys’ track team also made their mark at the VA Showcase with a record-breaking performance in the 4x200m relay. The team of Gabriel McLaughlin, Christian Turner, Andrew Desir, and Ockidde Harris blazed through the track with a time of 1:26.55, securing the US #3 ranking and setting a new school record. Their achievement is a testament to their hard work and dedication, standing out among elite competition from across the nation and beyond. The VA Showcase, held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center over two days, provided an incredible platform for our Stallions to compete at the highest level and showcase their talent on a national stage.
A Global Celebration Awaits: International Night 2025!
Get ready for an unforgettable celebration of culture, talent, and unity at our much-anticipated International Night, happening on February 15, 2025! This spectacular event will feature two dazzling shows—one at 12:00 noon, primarily for the families of our incredible performers, and another at 5:00 PM, open to all families and students eager to experience the magic. With vibrant performances, colorful displays, and a showcase of traditions from around the world, this night promises to be a feast for the senses and a true testament to the diversity that makes our Stallion community so extraordinary.
Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details next week—this is an event you won’t want to miss! Let the countdown to a night of culture, connection, and celebration begin!
South County’s Own Mary Moore Heads to the World Stage!
We are incredibly proud of the dedication and talent of Mary Moore, a true standout both in the classroom and in the gym. Over the weekend, Mary earned a coveted spot on Team USA and will compete in the World Technical Baton Twirling Championships in Italy this summer, marking her fourth time representing our country on the international stage. Though she’s modest about her achievements, her hard work and passion continue to shine through in everything she does. We are also thrilled to showcase her incredible talent—be sure to stop by the main office to see an action shot of Mary twirling with the South County Marching Band. Congratulations, Mary—your Stallion family is cheering you on all the way to Italy!
Curriculum Night Heats Up for Future Stallions!
Despite the freezing temperatures outside, nothing could cool the enthusiasm of our future Stallions as they made their way to South County for our incredibly successful Curriculum Night for rising freshmen. Families braved the cold to explore the wide array of exciting courses and extracurricular opportunities that await them next year, proving that their passion for learning couldn’t be put on ice! From engaging with department representatives to discovering new ways to get involved, the energy and excitement were truly electric. We are thrilled to welcome such a dedicated and eager group of students, and we can’t wait to see them leap into their high school journey with confidence!
Dragon Up the Excitement: Celebrating Vietnamese New Year!
I had the absolute pleasure of supporting our talented Stallion students as they took center stage at the Vietnamese New Year celebration, dazzling the crowd with their incredible performance. Dressed as magnificent dragons, they danced their way into the hearts of all attendees, bringing energy, culture, and joy to the celebration. Their hard work and dedication were on full display, showcasing the vibrant traditions of the Lunar New Year in a way that left everyone in awe. It was truly an honor to witness our students embracing cultural heritage with such passion—way to bring the fire, Stallions!
Wishing everyone a relaxing and refreshing weekend! Take some time to unwind, recharge, and enjoy the moments that matter most.
See you all next week, Stallions!
