We want your child to be successful in school and that means supporting and encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others. Later this month, we’ll begin Second Step® Elementary, a research-based social-emotional learning program designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following:
- Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.
- Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies—including stress management for older students—to calm strong feelings.
- Empathy & Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.
- Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:
- S: Say the problem
T: Think of solutions
E: Explore the outcomes
P: Pick a solution
You’ll receive information in the grade level newsletter to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. 📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy
Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office (703) 924-4500.
Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Watches that serve a dual purpose (e.g. smart watch) may be worn; however, phone features (e.g. texting, Internet, calls, etc.) are to be off when phone use is prohibited. Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency. With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only. Violations of this policy could result in confiscation of the item.
SR&R and Cell Phone Policy Survey Coming Soon
All FCPS families and middle and high school students will be receiving an email invitation on Tuesday, January 21, to participate in a survey about FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R), cell phone policy, and cell phone storage options. The survey will be available from January 21 to February 3. Please take a few moments to share your feedback and help FCPS make informed, inclusive decisions for all of our schools!
Effective January 6, 2025, on two-hour early release days, temporary transportation changes must be received by 12:30 p.m. and students may not be checked out after 1:00 p.m.
On three-hour early release days, temporary transportation changes must be received by 11:30 a.m., and students may not be checked out after 12:00 p.m.
And as a reminder, on normal school days, temporary transportation changes must be received by 2:30 p.m., and students may not be checked out after 3:00 p.m.
Temporary transportation changes must be made through the online transportation form.
As it gets closer to dismissal time, it is very challenging trying to reach teachers for last minute transportation changes, and safety is our number one concern as we want to be sure that we are sending all students home in the correct way. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Our snack pantry was created to ensure our students are not distracted by a grumbling tummy.

  Stuff the Bus is a partnership between Fairfax County Government and local nonprofits. Now in its 14th year, Stuff the Bus continues to support food assistance efforts for families and households. Stuff the Bus has collected more than 220 tons of food to feed people experiencing food insecurity in Fairfax County.
