Roadrunner Rundown

January 13, 2025

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

As the famous lyric goes, “and mom and dad can hardly wait for school to start again!”  I remember being surprised when the meaning of that lyric finally clicked for me.🙂  Well if you were not in that state on January 5th, you may be given the extended break brought to you, literally, by winter!  Hopefully, Winter Break and the snow days were restful and fun.

We are excited to get back to school and for the learning opportunities 2025 will bring us.  We have made some “resolutions” to amplify our use of the new language arts curriculum and to support student dialogue about math and math strategies, as well as resolutions related to student reflection on being Critical and Creative Thinkers, Global and Ethical Citizens and increasing our communication with you.

Help us begin 2025 strong by restarting routines for getting a good night’s sleep, having students attend school each day, and connecting with your students about how they are problem solvers at school.

Have a great week.

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

School Events and Information

Attendance Matters

Every hour of every school day is a unique opportunity for students to learn, connect, and grow. Let’s nurture rock-solid attendance habits in 2025.

A big thank you to:

  • 🌟 Students who show up daily and the parents/caregivers supporting them.
  • 👩‍🏫 Teachers who create a welcoming environment for learning.
  • 👨‍💼 Administrators who provide a safe and engaging place to grow.
  • 👏 Bus drivers, support staff, and volunteers who help our learners.

If you or your child need support, please contact a school counselor, social worker, or family liaison.

Student Teachers from Seoul National University, South Korea

Marshall Road, Flint Hill, Vienna, and Wolftrap ES will be welcoming student teachers from Seoul National University in South Korea during the weeks of January 15 and 20.  These aspiring educators will be observing and assisting teachers in four classrooms at our school during this time and gaining valuable insights into the teaching methods and the vibrant learning environment that MRES and our pyramid foster.  This unique opportunity not only benefits the interns, but also enriches our school community by providing different perspectives and fostering international educational exchange.  The student teachers will be supervised by esteemed professors from their university, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for all involved.

Learn how to get involved in International Night!

International Night will be held Friday, January 31, 5:30-7:30 pm. This annual event is an opportunity for students to showcase their culture and heritage and to experience the rich diversity of our community.  We need your participation to make it happen.  Please, consider hosting a country table here. Learn more on our International Night webpage. Volunteer at the event here!

Canned Drive

Canned Food Drive Competition

The Marshall Road weekend food program, F4T, is resuming and we need items to sustain our support for families throughout the school year.  Each week, Marshall Road volunteers will pack nearly 70 weekend food packs to help support children experiencing food insecurity with healthy food for the weekend.  Help students in our community with a donation, canned chicken and soup cans. The grade with the most cans donated will win a surprise.  Donations can be placed in the F4T bin in the lobby by students from January 21-31. Items can also be donated via our Amazon wish list or Walmart wish list.

MRES Staff Spotlight

Ms. Stirling, Technology Specialist.  This is Ms. Stirling’s 21st year of teaching!  She has been at MRES for 9 years as a tech specialist, but before that she was a 1st and 2nd grade teacher at another school.  She said, “My favorite thing about working at MRES is the people of course!  I love that I get to work with everyone…students, teachers, admin and parents in my role.  I love music and play the guitar and piano.  I also love yoga and hanging out with my 3 year old son!”
