The Wildcat Weekly - January 12, 2025

Centreville Students, Families, and Community,

I hope everyone enjoyed the extended winter break, found time to enjoy your favorite snow day activities, and stayed safe as we navigated this recent winter weather! It was wonderful having students back in the building on Friday, even if only for a shortened day. This week, we have a couple of big events I would encourage families to attend.

First, the PTSA is using the January 14th meeting (7:00 PM CVHS Library) to host an interest meeting for parents who are willing and able to volunteer for, donate to, support, learn about or chair the All Night Grad Party for the Class of 2025. This is not limited to parents of the class of 2025, often underclass parents have historically been the most involved!

Additionally, we will be hosting Centreville Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 15 from 6:30-8:15 PM. This is a great opportunity for students and families to hear directly from our staff about the courses offered at Centreville, and receive information about the course selection process from our Student Services team. This event is one of the highlights of the year, as it provides an opportunity to introduce incoming students to our incredible staff and showcase the many ways we support their academic success and social-emotional growth.

Looking ahead, the second quarter will come to a close on Tuesday, January 28. Now is an important time for students to review their grades and assignments, ensuring that any outstanding work is completed and assessments retaken if needed. Please encourage your student to check SIS and Schoology for any missing assignments or reassessment opportunities. Our teachers are available to provide support.

Thank you and Go Wildcats!

Dr. Erik Healey

Principal

Centreville High School

January 14 - PTSA Meeting: This Tuesday, January 14 at 7:00 PM, we will be hosting the PTSA meeting in the Library. The CVHS PTSA needs parents to be a part of the conversation about the All Night Grad Party (ANGP). The PTSA has always proudly sponsored the ANGP and supported the parent volunteers who make it happen!  The PTSA navigates all payments to vendors and venues.  But this event needs to be parent-led, so we need your support! Please join us at the PTSA meeting to support our students and this important event!

January 15 - Centreville High School Curriculum Night: Students and families are invited to attend Centreville’s Curriculum Night on January 15 from 6:30-8:30 PM. During our Open House format, staff representatives from each academic department will be available to answer any questions about our courses. We will also hold two special information sessions for Rising 9th Grade Course Registration Information (6:30-7:15 PM) and Rising 10th-12th Grade Course Registration Information (7:30 - 8:00 PM). Please reach out to your student’s counselor if you have any questions.

January 16 - Electives Fair: Due to the inclement weather last week, the Electives Fair for rising 10-12 grade students will be held virtually through students’ ROAR period on January 16. Students will have the opportunity to review electives of their interest by watching videos created by Centreville staff. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about courses of interest prior to course selection.

January 16 - Initial Course Selection: Students in grades 9-11 will select their courses for the 2025-2026 school year during ROAR. Students will be provided a brief lesson and overview of how to select courses in SIS. This will help prepare students for their individual academic advising conversations with their counselors. All students must have selected courses by February 28.

As students choose courses, it is important to remind them to consider the following:

  • Current academic strengths and habits.
  • Graduation requirements (high school students).
  • Interests and career and postsecondary goals.
  • Personal well-being.
  • Extracurricular activities and other commitments that may impact students’ time and energy.

School-life balance is an important consideration as students strive for academic and personal success. Families are welcome to contact their student’s school counselor with questions.

January 20 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday: Schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. See the complete school year calendar.

January 21-February 28 - Individual Academic Advising Meetings: Students will meet one-on-one with their counselors to discuss academic goals and finalize their course selections for next year. These meetings will occur during students’ English classes. We will begin with current juniors from January 21-31, current sophomores from February 3-14, and will conclude with current freshmen from February 18-28.

January 28 - End of Semester: Tuesday, January 28, is the last day of the quarter. SIS Gradebook will be unavailable beginning at 4:00pm.

January 29 - Lunar New Year No School For Students: Lunar New Year falls at quarter end on Wednesday, January 29. The day will be a teacher work day and there will be no school for students. See the complete school year calendar.

Important Information

FCPS Cell Phone Policy: Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our main office at 703-802-5400.

  • Phones must be silenced and put away during all instructional periods. At Centreville High School, students are asked to place their phones in the hanging caddies as they enter their classroom and can be picked up at the end of the class period.
  • Cell phones may be used on campus before the first bell, after the last bell, during passing periods, and lunches.
  • Phone accessories are also to be silenced and away when phone use is prohibited. Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
  • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.
  • With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for approved instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.

StudentVue & ParentVue Gradebook Available Until End-of-Quarter: Based on community feedback from the first quarter closure, FCPS revisited the scheduled dates for closing the Gradebook and Report Card modules in the SIS ParentVUE and StudentVUE apps. Moving forward, the app will close in alignment with the actual quarter-end dates. This change will allow students and families to view their assignments and grades until the last day of the quarter. Gradebook will be closed for the second quarter from Tuesday, January 28, 4:00 PM to Tuesday, February 4, 6:00 AM.
