Dear Families,
We’re glad to have everyone back for the start of the 2025 year. I hope you all enjoyed the opportunity to rest, relax and refresh. I had time to enjoy family and enjoy a fun trip to New Orleans. I also had time to listen, read and reflect. Additionally, I listened to the podcast Talking Race with Young Children and this TEDx Talk on Neurodiversity – the key that unlocked my world that were impactful for me as a leader and a mom.
We’re grateful to our custodial team for their hard work in clearing the snow around the building to reopen school. Whenever we experience a snow weather event, teams of FCPS staff work hard to clear the sidewalks, parking lots, and dig out the school buses. Many of the roads surrounding WFES continue to be icy and bus stops blocked. We appreciate the members of our community who cleared the snow so students could wait on the sidewalk, rather than in the road.
Thank you.
Sharyn Prindle

MIND Research is hosting family math week January 13 - January 17, 2025. During that time, students are encouraged to log onto the FCPS Family Math website to engage in math activities with their families at home that include stories with mathematical concepts connected to a variety of different math games from around the world. All activities are available in English and Spanish.
To learn more about Family Math Nights, check out this video. We hope that all schools will help spread the word and work collaboratively to help us reach our goal of logging on for three million minutes as an FCPS community.
Information will be available through the Elementary Schoology groups for teachers to easily copy over materials and links for students to participate with their families during math week in the New Year.

The Virginia Department of Education tracks the attendance data for all schools. Each school must work to keep the percent of students considered chronically absent low. Once a student has 15 absences, for any reason, they are considered chronically absent. Wakefield Forest currently has 5% of students showing as chronically absent for this time in the school year. Thank you for working to schedule vacations during days school is closed. If you need support for your child due to school refusal or other needs, please email me directly at sbprindle@fcps.edu and we will have members of our school team provide support. |

The SEL screener is given to students in grades 3-6 in the fall and spring each year. The data from this assessment is used to develop overall school goals. Based on the data from the 2023-24 school year, students self-reported fewer strengths with Emotional Regulation. The questions in this section addressed students’ perception on their own ability to remain calm. For example, when things go wrong for you, how calm are you able to stay? When you get upset, how often do you stop to think before you act?
Based on this data, we implemented the Zones of Regulation program school wide for the 2024-25 year. Teachers have been implementing lessons weekly to build students skills in areas of resiliency. Information was sent home in a mailer, and we hosted an in person family workshop in the fall to build family understanding of Zones of Regulation.
We will take the SEL screener again in the spring and will report out on progress in this area.
