Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings SoCo family,

Welcome back from the Winter Break and Snow Blast 2025! I hope everyone had time to relax and enjoy time with your family and friends. This most recent battle with snow certainly caught most of us unexpectedly in terms of the amount we received. I was thrilled to have students return on Friday this week. Given the abbreviated week, I don’t have as much to report, but here’s the latest:

School Culture:

We’re having our next Parent Advisory Council meeting on January 15. As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, we are trying a new format with this meeting to accommodate the varied work schedules of our parents. This meeting will be asynchronous, so all you need to do is rsvp at this link: https://forms.gle/4MBm9AW3VfzKuchN9

I’ll have information to share with you, as well as questions for which I’d like to receive your feedback.

Over Winter Break, our Stallions were in action, and one of the most thrilling moments came on the court at West Po! In a nail-biting showdown that went into overtime, our Boys Basketball team showed true Stallion spirit, charging ahead to secure a hard-fought victory (79-76). It was a slam-dunk performance that had fans on the edge of their seats—way to go, Stallions!

Club Corner

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is a student-led community that seeks to grow in faith through sports and fellowship. FCA’s mission is to engage, equip, and empower students to deepen their relationship with Jesus and lead others to do the same. The club meets twice a month for breakfast, Bible study, prayer, and meaningful discussions on applying faith to daily life. Members also represent FCA in school-sponsored events, fostering a supportive and faith-driven environment. For more information, contact club sponsors Mrs. Taylor-Hendricks at ttaylorhendr@fcps.edu, Mr. Shroff at cjshroff@fcps.edu, Coach Dodd at cjdodd@fcps.edu.

Let’s keep charging ahead, Stallions—together, we’re building a stronger, brighter, and more spirited South County!

AWARENESS

MENTORING

Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are.Learn more about Mentoring Month.

Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor.

All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.

The FCPS MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work. They meet for at least 30 minutes a week. Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student. Contact Martha Macdonald, mentoring specialist, for additional information at mmacdonald@fcps.edu
