❄️ Preparing for Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.
Winter Reading Challenge!
As an incentive to read over the break, students can complete the Fairfax County Public Library Reading Challenge: LINK
December 1, 2024 - January 31, 2025 Cozy up with a good book and read this winter! Participating in our Winter Reading Adventure is as easy as 1-2-3:
- Go to Beanstack and register for the Winter Reading Adventure. Don't have a Beanstack account? Create one now! Don't want to use Beanstack? Paper logs are available now at the public library and at Bucknell library .
- Depending on your age, earn ten or fifteen virtual badges by reading or listening to books, reading for 20 or 30 minutes, completing activities or a combination of all three. We have age-appropriate reading goals for Birth-2nd Grade, 3rd-6th Grades, Teens and Adults.
- Once you have met the reading goals for your age/grade, visit your neighborhood library branch and receive prizes (sneak peek) for finishing the program!
ALSO, bring your paper back to Bucknell and show Mrs. Ames to enter a raffle in January 2025. They will be returned to the student to redeem for prizes! Individuals can win a poster or a class dance party with Principal Green!

 On January 16th at 6PM, we will host a Rising 7th grade curriculum night and electives fair. Ssave the date!
From January 20-February 7, the Sandburg Middle School counselors will be visiting elementary schools to review course offerings and to provide academic advising to 6th grade students as they select their courses for next year. The Sandburg Middle School counselors will be reaching out to the elementary counselors directly to arrange a date and time for the visit. In addition, the Sandburg Middle School counselors will ensure that the elementary school counselors have academic advising materials to share with students and families upon their return from winter break.

Bucknell Elementary School is having a Career Day Event on: February 10, 2025.
It is our vision to prepare students that are college bound and career ready. To achieve this vision, we need the assistance of our families, community members, and public figures, so that together we may educate students on the importance of furthering their education and the vast career opportunities that are open to them. Therefore, we cordially invite you to conduct career presentations between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on February 10, 2025.
Presentations should be between 15-20 minutes in length. You will present to students ranging from kindergarten through 6th grade. The recommended format includes related school subjects, education/training, personal skills necessary in your field, typical day in your field, child friendly games and presentations, hands-on activities, or visuals, etc. In addition, we would certainly like for you to spend the morning with us at our school wide morning meeting at 9:00am. We appreciate any time that you may be able to dedicate to this very rewarding experience.

Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program will open on Monday, January 13, 2025. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion program for the 2024-25 school year.
Dual Language Immersion is available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.
Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Visit the Dual Language Immersion Program Registration page for a list of meetings by language offered.

 FCPS has designated Three Kings Day/Epiphany as a religious and cultural observance day. There is school on these days, however specific events that cannot be made up will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.
