Specialist Spotlight - Advance Academics

What:  Analogies (Critical and Creative Thinking)

Analogies are a powerful teaching and learning tool because they build upon the brain’s natural inclination to draw connections and comparisons as we learn new material.

As students compare, contrast, and find relationships and connections, teachers can add depth and complexity by providing opportunities for students to create direct or symbolic analogies.  Analogic thinking deepens intra- and inter-disciplinary understanding, resulting in deeper conceptual understanding.

Fox example:  How are cells like a school system?

At Home Connection:   Have your child draw and/or write about “How are cells (body cells) like a school system?” Take a picture and share it with me at  yfwilliams@fcps.edu

BMP Renovations Starting Soon!

We’ll soon begin preparation for phase 1 construction, to include the 2-story addition to our current building.  Interested in learning more?  Please join us on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. to learn more!  Details about in-person and virtual participation will come soon.

Volunteer Opportunities: Celebrating Cultural Stories Night

Bren Mar Park is hosting its annual Celebrating Cultural Stories Night in January 2025. This is an evening event that encourages students to experience new cultures by listening to stories in different languages. We welcome all community members to volunteer to read to the students in their home language. If you are interested in volunteering to read aloud for Celebrating Cultural Stories Night, please contact our Family Liaison, Belle Arze, at bbarze@fcps.edu for more details.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Coming Soon

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

Getting to Know Your BMP Staff

Heather Hale, 4th Grade Teacher

Hale

This will be my 12th year teaching and I’m going into my 11th year in FCPS. I have previously taught pre-kindergarten, second, and third grade. This will be my first year at Bren Mar Park and my first year teaching fourth grade!

I grew up in New Jersey and moved to Northern Virginia in 2013 after finishing college.

In my free time, I love to read, travel, watch football, and hang with my husband and our three rescue dogs - Thuli, Leon, and Kelce!
