This Week at Madison - 12/9/2024

12.6

A message from Dr. Reid about student attendance: To continue our dialogue about the new Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) 2024 Accountability System, I want to take just a moment to focus on chronic absenteeism as a part of school accountability. A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of their enrolled days in the school year for any reason – that’s only two days a month. A school’s chronic absenteeism rate is measured by calculating the percentage of students chronically absent out of all enrolled students in each school. Chronic absenteeism is one of only two areas of the School Performance and Support Framework (SPSF) common across elementary, middle, and high schools. Knowing the impact of chronic absenteeism on student engagement and academic achievement, the VDOE currently allows schools to help students recover missed hours through a program called in-person flexible instructional time. While make-up hours are not a direct replacement for missed instruction, they can offer students an important opportunity for additional practice and teacher support. The VDOE has requested that in-person flexible instructional time be allowed to adjust chronic absenteeism calculations for SPSF.  This request is currently pending a decision from the U.S. Education Department.

Important Info & Events

SGA Canned Food Drive

Monday, December 16th is the last day to donate to the SGA Canned Food Drive. They are currently 1,000 cans behind their goal, and WE NEED YOUR HELP to reach the  goal of 4,000 cans! These cans go to the Madison Food Pantry, and the organization, Food for Others.  Donations help students and families in need, especially during the holidays. Please consider donating for a good cause. Your student can bring in cans between Dec. 9th - Dec. 16th and drop them off during their advisory period.

PTSA Winter Clothing Drive

Thank you to everyone for their donations to the Madison High School/JMHS PTSA winter clothing drive!  A few more slots on the sign up have opened up for students in need. Donations are welcome in the main office through Monday, December 16th. Donation drop-off times are weekdays from 8am-4pm.  Donors can sign up here.  Any questions can be directed to Bethany Slingerland at bsslingerlan@fcps.edu. Thank you, as always, for the generosity and kindness the Madison community demonstrates towards our students!

Impact Aid Forms Needed

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in) and paper copies have been sent home with students. Please complete it as soon as possible.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Available

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October. Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.
