Churchill Chatter - Issue 9, December 16, 2024
Dear Churchill Road Families,
It’s hard to believe this is the last week of school for 2024! Our band, strings and chorus students performed in their spirited winter concerts for families, and all are celebrating winter spirit week this week. Second graders are heading to the Kennedy Center this week and all our students are looking forward to Friday’s winter parties! We are so grateful to all the parents who have participated in these activities and volunteered for the winter celebrations.
Our staff is excited about Wednesday’s Secret Snowman event. We especially want to thank our incredible PTA, for their thoughtfulness and everyone's generosity during this time of year.
As a reminder, to ensure students take a well-deserved break, no homework will be assigned over winter break. Also, no assignments will be due immediately following the break.
We hope you and your family enjoy your time together, and we look forward to welcoming all of our students back in the new year. Classes will resume on Monday, January 6, 2025!
As always, thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children. We do not take for granted the trust you have placed in us.

Character Strengths Focus
This week our school community is focusing on the character strength of Self Control.
Self-control means having the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act.
When we return from winter break, students will be focusing on Optimism.
Optimism means you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.
To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.

🤝🏻Boundary Review Community Meeting
If you did not get a chance to attend one of the recent community meetings on the Comprehensive Boundary Review, please consider attending the final meeting in this first phase of the boundary review process. The Region 1 meeting will take place Wednesday, December 18, 6:30-8 p.m.,in the Madison High School cafeteria. Register today. If you are unable to participate, stay tuned for details about virtual Community Boundary Review Meetings coming early next year.

📚 Bundle Up With Books Over Break
Fairfax County Public Library’s (FCPL) winter reading adventure has begun and will continue through Friday, January 31, 2025. Visit your local FCPL library branch or visit their website to register and get a sneak peek at the prizes being offered.
Check out their Winter Reading Events webpage to learn about laser tag, movie nights, crafting sessions, Noon-Year Eve celebrations, and book discussions.

FCPS Cares Program
Recognizing employees who go above and beyond
FCPS Cares is an opportunity for parents, staff and community members to recognize those who go above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story so we can all acknowledge the outstanding work of FCPS, and more specifically, Churchill Road employees.
📅Churchill Road Front Office Closed During Winter Break
The front office will be closed from December 23rd - January 3rd. Students and staff will return on January 6, 2024.
Winter Break
As a reminder, winter break will be held Monday, December 23, to Friday, January 3. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year.

Exploring Boundaries in Parenting: Pros, Cons and Consequences
January 9th at 7 PM at the McLean Community Center
The Safe Community Coalition offers monthly parent discussion groups facilitated by licensed mental health professionals. This month’s topic, Exploring Boundaries in Parenting; Pros, Cons and Consequences, helps parents set effective boundaries for children and teens and helps to create healthier family relationships. Join Mimi Weisberg, LCSW, Heather Tedesco, Ph.D., and Jennifer Lager, Psy.D. as we explore setting reasonable expectations and boundaries for different developmental stages. Participants are encouraged to share scenarios and techniques that have been effective and tools and resources to help with the challenges of parenting will be provided.
