Providence History Fair

history

The PES History Fair on February 13 is an opportunity for students in grades 2 -- 6 to research and share what they learned about any history-related subject. Students choose their own topics, which can be historical events (e.g., Revolutionary War), people (e.g., Ada Lovelace), cultures (e.g., Mayan civilization), or other subjects (e.g., history of soccer).

Students can work by themselves or with a group of friends. Projects will take the form of some kind of display like a poster or diorama. Dress-up/reenactments are also encouraged!

Optional study sessions will be held after school on Thursdays in January for those students who need assistance or dedicated time to prepare.

For more information and to sign-up, use this link. The deadline to register to participate in the History Fair is Friday, December 20.

Cold Weather Guidance

cold

This is a reminder that students spend 30 minutes outdoors during recess each day. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and/or other cold-weather clothing, gloves, and a hat, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

Throughout the winter, FCPS and the Providence principals monitor the weather for very low temperatures, wind chill advisories, and weather warnings which may prevent children from being outside and call for us to shorten the time outside for recess.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing our Family Liaison, Piedad Dwyer (pdwyer@fcps.edu) is happy to support you.

Attendance

attendance

With the winter break approaching, it is essential to reiterate the importance of consistent school attendance for our students. Studies have repeatedly proven that students with better attendance records perform better in school and are more likely to graduate high school on time.

Students who have 18 or more absences, whether excused or unexcused, are considered chronically absent, resulting in the need for a school based conference and an attendance plan to be developed.

Please read the tips below to support regular school attendance and foster a positive attitude in your student regarding school and education:

  • Establish routines that help reduce stress.
  • Maintain strong connections with friends and teachers to ensure prompt communication in case of any concern or emergency.
  • Provide us with your updated email address and phone number.
  • Review your student’s attendance record regularly and make necessary adjustments after tardiness or medical appointments to your school office.
