Family Life Education/Human Growth & Development
This year, as in years past, FLE/HGD lessons will take place from December 16th-December 20th. An ENotify went out before the break inviting families to the Family Preview Night that took place on Tuesday, 12/3. All materials and lessons may be viewed on our Schoology page here. The county has transitioned to digital opt-outs via ParentVue. If you missed the opt-out and would not like your child to participate in one or more of the lessons for their grade level, please contact the office at 703-923-1400 or email Marti Lee at MLLee@fcps.edu.
Teachers will include a report of your child’s performance on our most recent unit assessment in the Friday Folder on 12/13 for Grades 1 through 6 and on 12/20 for Kindergarten. This report includes each of the standards that were assessed and your child’s score on each standard. A list of grade level standards can be found on the VDOE website under the 2024 English Standards of Learning.
As part of our new curriculum this year for Language Arts, all students will be completing a unit assessment at the end of each unit. These assessments will provide teachers with a snapshot of how students are progressing in grade level expectations and include questions that cover multiple progress report standards. These assessments will be one of many data points that will be considered when assigning progress report scores.
The unit assessment is a measure of your child’s performance on grade level standards. In Language Arts, students will be working on their grade level standards throughout the year and are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the school year. You can expect performance on the unit assessments to increase over time as the students continue to learn and practice their grade level skills. The results of this assessment will inform your child’s teacher of areas where they need additional instruction and practice, so they can continue to work towards mastering grade level standards.
As in years past, we would like to help families in need with financial assistance over the winter in the form of gift cards. We know winter months can be difficult for families, even if no holidays are being celebrated. If your family has a need this year, please reach out to the school counselors or the school social worker by December 11th. The White Oaks Community has so generously supported our families in need over the years. If your family is able to donate a gift card from Walmart or Target please drop them off in the front office by December 13th. Gift cards in smaller denominations ($5 or $10) are appreciated so we can divide them up among our families. School Counselors: Jayne Mejia jfmejia@fcps.edu and Lynn Bush lmbush@fcps.edu School Social Worker: Liz Mallon emmallon@fcps.edu
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported. Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.
Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Susan Lattuca (salattuca@fcps.edu) or Dana Harlan (daharlan@fcps.edu) no later than 11:59 p.m. on December 15, 2024.
No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.
Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they have been turned in for central selection by emailing Susan and/or Dana.
Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.
