Dear Shrevewood Families,
We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families and friends. Due to the upcoming holidays, we want to remind you about the importance of your student’s attendance. One way we demonstrate our shared purpose is through partnering on student attendance. Our current chronic absenteeism rate is 13.0%. Our goal is to stay below 10% all year. Every day that we partner together to keep chronic absenteeism down, we provide all of our students with the environment to succeed.
Next Monday, December 9th, is our next 3 hour early release Monday. You should have received confirmation of your child's early release plan earlier this week. Any changes to that plan should be made by emailing Assistant Principal Dan Reichard (dlreichard@fcps.edu) no later than the end of today, Dec. 5.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Sincerely,
Katie Vandawalker, Principal
Dan Reichard, Assistant Principal

Students in grades 4-6 will be participating in Family Life Education lessons. The lesson materials are available for your review in the All Parents/Guardians Schoology Course. To log in, use your same username and password as SIS ParentVue. You are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 10, at 5:00 p.m. in the library. All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time, and any questions about the material can be addressed. An opt out form is available in the Parent Digital Consent (PDC), which you also use your SIS ParentVUE username and password to access. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. If you have any questions, please contact Katie Vandawalker at kmvandawalke@fcps.edu.
Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to April Done via email at ardone@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2024.
The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually. Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.
Full-Time Referral Form (PDF):
Please also consider filling out the Parent Questionnaire Form found on the AAP Forms Page if you submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services.
Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP services will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will compile a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio to determine eligibility for full-time placement. Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio after it has been submitted for central selection by emailing April Done at ardone@fcps.edu.
Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP services are screened at the local school level. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP services for the remainder of the school year, and a referral for Full-Time AAP services may be submitted next fall.
For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.
The 2024 Winter 6th Grade Band Concert will take place on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7:00 p.m. at Kilmer Middle School. Sixth grade band students should arrive at Kilmer Middle School at 6:15 p.m. and enter through the main entrance. We can’t wait to share some great music with you soon!
Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.
For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.
At Tuesday’s School Board work session, staff from Prismatic Services, Inc., presented options for adjusting start times at FCPS middle schools. As a reminder, Prismatic is charged with developing an action plan to help the School Board reach its goal of starting middle school at or after 8 a.m.
The presentation includes five options for adjusting middle school start times based on the consultant’s analysis from community forums, surveys, and interviews with staff, parents, associations, and other groups. The School Board will provide next steps to the superintendent.
Watch a video of the work session. Visit the Middle School Start Times webpage for more information on the project.
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please email our Family Liaison, Fatima Phillips at frphillips@fcps.edu.
Please fill out the Federal Impact Aid Survey online through ParentVUE today!
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is eligible for Federal Impact Aid grants due to the federal presence in our area. The grants from these programs will become part of FCPS' general operating budget. They are critical to ensuring that students receive an excellent education. FCPS anticipates receiving approximately $4,000,000 in Impact Aid funds. FCPS uses the survey for Impact Aid to identify federally connected students.
The Impact Aid survey is available online through ParentVUE. Families without ParentVUE can request a paper copy of the survey from school. FCPS staff will process the information with the utmost confidentiality.
Here is a link to instructions to access the survey in ParentVUE: https://www.fcps.edu/impact

If you are interested in learning more about Literacy in elementary schools in FCPS, please take a look at the Literacy Resources for Families and Family-Facing Curriculum sites for families.
Next week, our school community will focus on the character strength of supporting others.
Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There is a Chinese saying that sums this up: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence.
To practice and encourage this character strength at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.

🎁 PTA Community Outreach Holiday Drive 🎁
This holiday season, let’s come together to support our Shrevewood students and families! Explore ways to donate here.
The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed three hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.
The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:
- September 23
- October 28
- December 9 (Changed from November 25)
- February 24
- March 17
- April 28
- May 19
Additional information can be found on the FCPS Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu.
- Enter at Door 1 and report to the Main Office.
- Using a government issued photo ID, sign-in and receive a visitor sticker.
- Wear the visitor sticker at all times.
- Report directly to the cafeteria.
- Enjoy lunch with your child(ren).
- Return to the main office to check-out using your visitor sticker.
- Please don't visit the classroom or recess, so our daily schedule and routines can continue without interruption for our students.
- Please do not bring fast food for lunch.
- Please do NOT bring any food to share with other children due to safety protocols and allergies.
As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.
Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your child’s well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.
Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.
Students, families, and staff throughout FCPS and in our school community will use Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as our learning management system. Here is what you need to know:
You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to log in to Schoology.
Breakfast and Lunch
