December 6 - News and Notes!
Rolling Valley Families,
The cold snap cam quickly! Even with the colder weather our students still managed to enjoy recess! As temperatures drop, please remind your students to grab their jackets on the way out and bring them home after school. If you think your student might have misplaced their coat, our Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets and hats—come take a look! If your family needs assistance with winter gear, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly.
Next week, we’re kicking off an optional Spirit Week! Check below for the daily themes and items your students can wear to join the fun. This follows our “Secret Underground Spirit Week,” where staff dressed up with a theme unbeknownst to students. It was so much fun seeing some of our students piece it together and guess what was going on!
Looking ahead, don’t forget to mark your calendars for December 17th when RVES will host the Winter Band and Strings Concert.
Stay warm and have a safe weekend!
Veronica Del Bagno
Rolling Valley Elementary School Principal
Upcoming Dates
RVES Spirit Week
Dec. 9 - 13
Check out what is happening at Rolling Valley:
Please see the above calendar with some optional spirit days if your child would like to participate. We hope you will join in on the fun!
Building Communication Skills in Second Grade!
This week, our second graders focused on improving their ability to communicate effectively by practicing the art of paraphrasing. They learned how to restate each other's ideas in their own words, a skill that enhances listening, understanding, and collaborative discussions. Great job, second grade, on strengthening these important skills!
Local Full Time AAP at Rolling Valley
In an effort to provide local access to Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) services, our school is in the process of starting a Local Full-Time Program. Full-Time AAP services will be available at Rolling Valley in grade 3 beginning in the 2025-2026 school year. Full-Time AAP services will be expanded to grades 4-6 over the subsequent three school years. By the 2028-2029 school year, Full-Time AAP services will be available at our school in grades 3-6.
The Local Full-Time Program will allow center eligible students to stay at their neighborhood school and receive Full-Time AAP services and will provide increased opportunities for students throughout the school to access AAP curriculum and resources.
We are interested in your thoughts regarding Rolling Valley becoming a Local Full time program. Please complete this surveyto help us prepare for Local Full-Time AAP expansion! If you have any questions, please reach out to Krystyn Carey at krcarey@fcsp.edu.
Preparing For Winter Weather
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.
Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care
Impact Aid Survey
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.
For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, we will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
