Dear Terraset Families,

Welcome Back!  We hope you enjoyed a relaxing Thanksgiving Break with plenty of time for loved ones and favorite activities. We are excited for this month’s learning, celebrations, and fun here at school.

Next Monday, 12/9 we will not only have our next 3 hour early release Monday, but also kick off our 10 Days of Cheer! See below for more details about these special spirit days and join us in the December fun. Be sure to also check your email for this month’s early release Monday dismissal confirmation for your child/ren. Any changes to that plan should be made by calling the main office at 703-390-5600 by no later than Thursday, December 5th.  It will be very difficult to navigate dismissal changes on the 9th. Our priority is to get every Tiger home safely at the correct time.

Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and enthusiasm. Together we will ensure this year continues to be outstanding for every Tiger!

Warmly,

Katie Aldridge, Principal

Dave Ickowski, Assistant Principal

📷Picture Retakes - Thursday, December 12

If your student is new to Terraset as of 9/20 or was absent on this day, they should have their photo taken for the Yearbook. If a student is getting a retake because they did not like their first picture, they should bring in their original pictures package and give it to the photographer at the time of retake. This link will allow parents to sign up to receive updates via email regarding their child's school portraits. These updates include promotions, additional deals and the ability to order more pictures at a later time. When entering student information, parents should be sure to enter the student's name as it is on file at the school.

📝Reminder:  Window for Full-Time AAP Referrals Closes on December 15, 2024

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for Full-Time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Jennifer Szczesniak, jkszczesniak@fcps.edu, no later than December 15, 2024

The window for families to submit a referral for Full-Time AAP services is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for Full-Time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for Full-Time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of six trained professionals from various schools and roles will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for Full-Time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April.

Referrals for Subject-Specific and Part-Time AAP are screened at the local school. If you miss this deadline, your student can still be screened for Subject-Specific AAP or Part-Time AAP for the remainder of the year and submit a referral for Full-Time AAP next fall.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

❄️ Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.

FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

🧤Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

🧣Coat Drive

Please help all of our Terraset Tigers stay warm this winter!

We are collecting all sizes of clean, good condition coats, boots, hats, gloves, and scarves. Please drop off items in the bin located in the Main Office. Thank you!

💻Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results Coming Soon

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

In early December, individual student SEL Screener results will be available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

🍽️Food Allergies Cafeteria Form

Starting School Year 2024-2025, the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) implemented a standardized process for dietary accommodations to ensure the provision of safe and healthy food for our students. If your child will need a medical accommodation (food allergies, texture modifications, or other dietary needs) or a milk substitution in the cafeteria, this a reminder to submit your completed accommodation form if you have not already done so. This form only needs to be filled out once while your child is enrolled at FCPS.  The completed form should be sent to dietary.forms.fns@fcps.edu.

More information including the form can be found here. If you have any questions, please contact FCPS Food and Nutrition Services at:  703-813-4800
