Navy Update 12.1.24

Collage of student images

Tomorrow we are looking forward to welcoming back everyone from a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We’re excited to kick off this week by welcoming Bunny Lancaster as our interim principal. Last week may have been a short week but we packed in a lot of fun. Mrs. Cooksey's class held their festive Thanksgiving Day Parade and our 6th graders collaborated to build the planets out of playdoh to explore their relative sizes. With just a few weeks before our next break, we are ready for more learning and fun! Have a wonderful week.

Navy Welcomes Special Guest

On November 26, Navy Elementary had the honor of hosting Virginia Delegate Irene Shin for an insightful visit focused on FCPS’s literacy programs and initiatives. During her time on campus, Delegate Shin met with staff and administration to learn more about the implementation of the new Benchmark curriculum and how the school is aligning its efforts with the Virginia Literacy Act.

Teachers shared their personal experiences, highlighting both the benefits and challenges of these recent changes. Discussions included how the Benchmark curriculum is fostering stronger foundational literacy skills and how the Virginia Literacy Act is shaping instruction to ensure students achieve reading proficiency. The visit provided an opportunity for educators to share their perspectives on the impact of these programs on student success and the support needed to continue delivering high-quality instruction.

Navy Elementary is proud to be at the forefront of literacy education and grateful for Delegate Shin’s interest in and support of initiatives that empower students to succeed

Inova Hospital Seasonal Card Challenge

inova directions

Hello! We are continuing to partner with Inova Fair Oaks Hospital for the Seasonal Card Design Challenge. This year’s theme is “Do More Together.”  Cards should focus on the spirit and beauty of the season and the idea of doing more together benefits the entire community.

Instructions for designs:

  • Card designs should be 100% student created.
  • Simple, bold, colorful designs work best.
  • White paper or colored paper is fine with a minimum size of 8 ½ x 11 inches.
  • Please print your first and last name, grade, and teacher on the back of the artwork in pencil.
  • Avoid using lead pencil on the front as pencil lines do not reproduce well.

Deadline: Friday, December 13. Prior to the end of the year, Inova Fair Oaks will announce the Navy Elementary student artist whose design will be featured on the hospital seasonal card.

We look forward to showcasing the incredible creativity of our students and the importance of community collaboration!
