Roadrunner Rundown
November 25, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we would like to wish all of you a wonderful break. To that end, I have communicated to the Marshall Road Staff the need to give our students (and themselves) a respite from the daily grind of schoolwork during the Thanksgiving holiday. While teachers may have long-term assignments that span over the course of a break, I have shared with the staff to not assign homework, projects, essays, etc. to be specifically done over the break.
This Thanksgiving all of us need the opportunity to spend time with our families and friends. We want our students to have the opportunity to catch a breath from schoolwork and to enjoy time with friends and family. We also want our teachers to decompress and put their lesson plan books and laptops away for a few days to enjoy time with their friends and family. Our goal is to have students and teachers return to school anxiety-free without the pressure of looming deadlines. This is a unified message that Madison pyramid principals send out three times during the year: Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break.
We want to take a moment to let you know how grateful we are to be part of such a wonderful school community. We are thankful for all of you and we are especially grateful for your children.
There will be no school for students and staff on November 27, 28 and 29. School offices will be closed and classes will resume on Monday, December 2
We wish you all a peaceful and restful Thanksgiving break!

Talking Points
Talking Points is a valuable tool to improve communication between families and teachers. Important messages from the school will be sent directly to your phone as text messages and will be translated into your home language. To respond to these messages, simply download the free Talking Points app and sign up using the phone number you provided during school registration. Please note that once you download the app, you will no longer receive text messages, so it’s a good idea to allow notifications from the app to stay updated. We look forward to fostering stronger connections between home and school!
Step 1: Download the Talking Points for Families app for iPhone or Android
Step 2: Allow Notifications in the app settings
Step 3: Send messages in your home language that will be translated to English for your child’s teachers!
If you decide later to stop using the app, you must LOG OUT of the app to revert back to receiving text messages. Deleting the app from your phone DOES NOT restore text communication.

Attendance Matters
It is interesting to see how school attendance has shifted over the years. The most recent federal data show that in the 2020-21 school year, at least 14.7 million students nationwide were chronically absent. This means that chronic absence has almost doubled from the more than 8 million students, pre-Covid-19, who were missing so many days of school that they were academically at risk. Read more about these attendance changes here. Please join MRES in reversing these trends.
Help Prevent the Spread of Illness
As we transition into the fall and winter seasons, please remind your children of the importance of practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. These simple practices can significantly reduce the spread of germs, particularly during the upcoming holiday season when gatherings and travel increase.
Key Reminders:
-
Wash Hands Frequently: Encourage students to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
-
Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water are not readily available, provide access to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content.
-
Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Remind students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly in a wastebasket and wash their hands.
-
Avoid Touching Face: Discourage students from touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

MRES Staff Spotlight
Ms. Ezikpe (Ms. E) has worked in FCPS for 21 years but this is her first year at Marshall Road ES. She is grateful for the respect, kindness and support that she has received from all at MRES - the administration, school staff, students, PTA and the MRES family at large. This has made the adjustment to a new school much easier and makes it feel like home.
Ms. E loves to cook, read, walk outdoors and travel. She enjoys having conversations, to work things out, or to get to know people better.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon
One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.
The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.
In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.
Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact us.

Preparing for Winter Weather❄️
Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made.
FCPS’ website is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated here.
Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE, bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.
Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities
We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.
If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.
