Dear Poplar Tree Families,
We need your help with ensuring that our students come to school because absences add up! The weeks surrounding Thanksgiving and Winter Break we often see an increase in student absences.
Here are some important facts:
- Missing 18 days in a school year or 2 days every month equals lower test scores and retention in later grades.
- Research shows that students who miss just 2 days of school a month are less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
- 10% of school days missed can lead to chronic absence.
- Chronic absenteeism in elementary school significantly disrupts a child’s ability to build foundational skills in math.
- Missing a large number of school days can hinder social development, as students miss opportunities to form relationships and practice teamwork.
- By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
When planning a long family trip, please be aware of the following FCPS Regulations:
- Students who are absent for 15 consecutive days will be unenrolled from our system and must be re-enrolled in order to return to school.
- Teachers shall not be required to provide assignments in advance of the absences but may do so at their discretion.
- Parents and students are encouraged to work with teachers prior to the absence to develop a plan for making up missed work, including expected deadlines.
For more information please visit the Attendance Resources and Support page on the FCPS Website.
We appreciate your support!

🧴 Staying Healthy! 🦠
As we transition into the fall and winter seasons, it's important to remind our students, staff, and families about the importance of practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. These simple practices can significantly reduce the spread of germs, particularly during the upcoming holiday season when gatherings and travel increase.
Key Reminders:
-
Wash Hands Frequently: Encourage students to wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, and after blowing their nose, coughing, or sneezing.
-
Use Hand Sanitizer: When soap and water are not readily available, provide access to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol content.
-
Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Remind students to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of tissues properly in a wastebasket and wash their hands.
-
Avoid Touching Face: Discourage students from touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
