Dear Thoreau Families,
We hope everyone had a wonderful Veterans Day on Monday. To all the Veterans who have served, we extend our deepest gratitude for your service and sacrifices. To commemorate this special day, students participated in activities through social studies classes, and we proudly displayed family Veteran submissions and student recognitions in our hallway. (See pictures below)
We invite you to join families across the Vienna schools in supporting those in need through our CANNED FOOD DRIVE from November 25th to December 13th. Our goal is to collect 1,000 cans from Thoreau and support Food For Others, a local food bank helping families in need across Fairfax County.
Our amazing Student Services department is hosting an in-person Parent Coffee on Friday, December 6th at 10 AM. Please join us to learn more about the SEL Screener and how our team supports your children. We'll be scheduling more opportunities throughout the year on various topics with the Thoreau administration and Student Services team. We hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Teresa Khuluki
Principal

As a reminder, FCPS has started reviewing school boundaries across the division. This vital work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is essential to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will host a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.
Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.
Some families may be looking for additional resources to help support their child’s academic success. The Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of FCPS employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to hire as a tutor. This list is a resource offered by the FRC, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with the tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource to families.
FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.
Kids and families are under stress from so many sources, and they are suffering as a result. Achievement pressure, time pressure, social pressure, and uncertainty about a rapidly changing world are eroding the health of our youth. But it doesn’t have to be that way!
Well-known parenting expert, psychologist and author (and FCPS parent) Dr. Heather Tedesco will show you:
- The surprising ways stress shows up in kids
- The power parents have to reduce stress (in our kids and ourselves)
- How we can nurture happiness and build psychological strength in our kids long-term
- Specific strategies to stress less and enjoy more

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.
Schools will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE by Monday, November 11. Paper forms should be returned by Monday, December 4.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
After-School is an amazing opportunity for our staff & students to connect outside of the normal school day hours! Students & staff are coming up with some really creative clubs to kick off this exciting school year. After-School clubs & late buses will continue to occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between the hours of 2:25pm - 4:45pm throughout the school year!
Check out all of the after-school information linked below!
Please have your student access these links using their FCPS Google account!
Weekly After-School Club Schedule – this is the club schedule for the week of November 18th – November 22nd. The weekly club schedule is updated weekly since clubs are always being added as they are created by students and Thoreau staff. Club Descriptions – learn a little bit more about what each particular club is and what they will be offering to the students.
Late Bus Routes/Stops – help your child find their late bus stop. Late buses depart from Thoreau on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 4:30pm-5pm only!
NO After-School Activities or Late Bus Transportation on: Early Release Days, County Holidays or possible cancellation due to inclement weather. NO AFTER-SCHOOL OR LATE BUSES ON 11/25 and 11/26 due to Thanksgiving Break week!
