A Message from the Principal

Greetings Ravensworth Families,

While our week may have been short, we seem to have packed it full of fun!  Yesterday we held our very successful Run 4 Ravensworth event.  Thanks to the Ravensworth PTA, families, and students for raising over $20,000.  This money goes to support field trip buses, STEAM materials, teacher grants, author visits, and so much more!  Since our students met our $15,000 goal, I had the opportunity of serving them lunch today.  I enjoyed surprising them with my chef hat and apron.

Last evening I had the honor of representing Ravensworth Elementary at the FCPS School Board Meeting.  Ravensworth was honored for receiving the Purple Star School designation for the 2nd time.  We are one of 96 schools in FCPS named by the Virginia Department of Education for this honor.  A big thank you to Annie Bowen, our Purple Star Committee, and staff who support our military connected students.

Family Math Night is this Thursday, November 21st from 6:30-7:30 pm in the gym.  All kindergarten- sixth grade students and families are welcome to learn and play fun math games that you can do at home.  We hope to see you there.

November is National Family Engagement Month! This month reminds us that families are children’s first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Over 40 years of research shows that the most effective way to increase student achievement is for families to be actively involved in the education of their children. We appreciate your continued engagement and support of your child’s education.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Erika Aspuria

Principal

Attention FCPS Families! The Federal Impact Aid Survey is available to complete online.

impact aid

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, Ravensworth Elementary School will be providing paper forms on Wednesday, November 20. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Learn how to activate your SIS ParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type Federal Impact Aid Survey under Issue Description. Or, call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Full-Time Advanced Academics Expansion

On Wednesday, November 6th, we held a community meeting about the expansion of Full-Time Advanced Academics at Ravensworth. Thank you to those who attended. We encourage all families to review the presentation and complete the survey. We appreciate your engagement and feedback as we plan for the launch of this program in the 2025-2026 school year! Please contact Mrs. Trumbull, our AART, with any questions at astrumbull@fcps.edu

Full-time Advanced Academics Referrals are due on December 15, 2024. This remains the deadline even though it is a Sunday.

Mrs. Trumbull is offering optional mini-conferences via Zoom for families who would like to touch base before submitting their full-time Advanced Academics Referral. These 15 minute conferences are to look over submissions and answer questions about Full-Time AAP Referrals. She cannot comment on what to include but can confirm everything is included and formatted correctly. You can sign up here.

General information about Full-Time Referrals:

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs may submit the AAP Full-Time Referral Form to Mrs. Trumbull, Advanced Academic Resource Teacher at astrumbull@fcps.edu no later than December 15, 2024. Optional materials include the Parent/Guardian Questionnaire and up to 2 pages of work samples.

Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page.

No late referrals for Full-Time AAP services will be accepted. Do not wait for the results of the CogAT test. If you would like your child considered for the full-time program, you should submit a referral.

Cold Weather Is Coming!

Winter is around the corner!  As temperatures drop, please be sure to send your children with coats and outerwear to keep them warm for outdoor activities.  Bringing these additional items to and from school means that the Lost & Found is growing!  Please be sure to label your child's items and encourage them to check the Lost & Found in cafeteria for any missing items.

Math Olympiads

math olympiads1

Ravensworth will be participating in the Math Olympiads again this year! Students in Advanced 5th and 6th Grade Math classes will take the contests during class time. If your 5th or 6th grade child is not currently enrolled in Advanced Math and would like to participate, you can sign up here.

There are 5 contests throughout the year: November 22nd, December 6th, January 17th, February 21st, and March 14th. We will do our best to reschedule in the case of any snow days, but there will not be make ups for absences. Please contact Mrs. Trumbull, our AART and Olympiad PICO, with any questions at astrumbull@fcps.edu

Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity

lightspeed3

FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.

Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Learn more about Lightspeed Parent Reports.

Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month

Boundary graphic for newsletters

As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.  The Region 4 Boundary Review Community Meeting will be held at the Lake Braddock SS cafeteria on Tuesday, December 3rd at 6:30 pm.

Tutoring Resources for Families

Tutors fcps

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.
