Message from Mr. Greata
Despite a shorter week, it has been hopping here at Carter G. Woodson High School. We had lots of community visitors and celebrations that I am excited to share with you!
As part of our ongoing recognition of veterans and military connected families, we were thrilled to host members of our military community for our Military Appreciation Breakfast this morning. A heartfelt thank you to all our veterans who selflessly serve our nation. And, thank you to Alaina Andersen, Debbie Glover, Lizzie Walter, Adrienne Wood, and Josh Peters for planning not only this event, but also our Student Services Advisory Council event this week.
Each and everyday, we work alongside some incredible professionals that are dedicated to the well-being and education of our students. To recognize National School Psychologists Week, we want to extend our gratitude to our incredible school psychologists, Ryan Dickerson, Risha Lamba, and Jennifer Zabel, who are always going above and beyond!
This week, we celebrated numerous student accomplishments, including 11 student-athletes who participated in our Fall College Commitment Ceremony. We know that these scholar-athletes will continue to excel academically and athletically at the collegiate level, and we couldn’t be prouder!
Congratulations to choir members Sarah Hymans, Charlotte Reymann, Serena Mancuso, Joaquin Najar, and alternate Emily Hudders, who were selected to represent Carter G. Woodson High School at the Virginia Senior Honor Chorus! These talented singers will join other select students in Norfolk from November 21-23 under the direction of Grammy Award-winning conductor Dr. Jeffrey Redding.
Additionally, we welcomed State Senator Marsden, Delegate Laura Jane Cohen, and School Board Member Rachna Sizemore Heizer to our school to discuss school needs and visit some of our outstanding classrooms. I’m proud of our students, who seized the opportunity to ask questions and share insights, representing our community exceptionally well.
A few important reminders:
- Please check the detailed information below regarding the upcoming FCPS division-wide boundary review, which will take place across all six divisions. We hope to see you at the Region 5 meeting on December 2 at Westfield High School from 6:30 PM to 8 PM.
- Join us next Wednesday as we celebrate National Family Engagement Month with a morning coffee from 7:00-7:45 AM or an evening session from 6:00-7:00 PM in the library for cookies and conversation.
- As winter approaches, please remember our building opens at 7:30 AM. We appreciate you keeping this in mind when dropping students off, especially as temperatures drop.
This weekend, if you haven’t attended a performance of Lear yet, I highly encourage you to see a performance! Our thespians’ talents shine, through their technical expertise, acting skill, singing prowess, and costume design. Also, good luck to our cross-country team competing at States this weekend at The Oatlands!

Attendance For Thanksgiving Week
Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is unavoidable, please speak with your child’s teachers in advance to create a plan for making up missed work.
It is also imperative that you let our Attendance Office know as soon as possible for any early dismissals. Remember, early dismissals cannot be submitted through ParentVUE, only Full Day Absences can be submitted there.
If your student will need an early dismissal, you must either leave a voicemail on our attendance line (please provide us with more than a 30 minute heads up!), or have the student bring in a note directly to the attendance office.

There will be two sessions to choose from: 7:00am-7:45am or 6:00pm-7:00pm

Impact Aid Forms
All families should complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in).
Please complete the form for each school-aged child in your household. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. Visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page to learn more.

Counselor Corner
School counselors have been busy so far as we’ve begun the second quarter! We hosted our fall Advisory Council meeting on Nov 14 and shared program highlights with key stakeholders including students, parents, and faculty. Next week on Monday, Nov 18, we will present an important program to our 9th grade students called Signs of Suicide (SOS). This program discusses suicide awareness and prevention, and what to do if you are concerned about yourself or others.
Additionally, counselors have already written 335 letters of recommendation in support of our seniors applying to colleges, and expect to continue submitting transcripts and documents, and writing letters of recommendation, through January. Seniors, please be aware of deadlines to ensure that your documents are submitted on time. Additionally, if you would like a letter of recommendation from your counselor, we require 15 school days ahead of your deadline. Complete the google form before submitting your transcript request form and come get help before school any Wednesday in the College & Career Center. We will again host a college application support workshop on Nov 22 during lunches - no appointment needed!
Check out the Woodson school wide calendar for upcoming events (please bookmark it and refer to it regularly). You can also filter the calendar to view College & Career Center and Student Services events specifically, for example: NOVA information sessions during lunches, NACAC Virtual College Fair, Scholarship 101 Virtual Session, Junior Information Night (coming up on December 4!), and Military Recruiter visits during lunches.
Speaking of calendars, all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade parents, please mark your calendars for our annual Curriculum Night! This year’s event will be held on January 15 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Woodson Cafeterias and Auditorium. Teachers and staff from all our academic departments will be present at this event, which helps kicks off the academic advising season and provides information to students and parents to ensure informed decisions are made regarding course selection for next school year. Additional information and details will be shared in the coming days.
Three shows remaining! Friday, November 15th at 7:00pm Saturday, November 16th at 1:00pm and 7:00pm
