Holmes Families,
It’s been another fantastic week at Holmes! Our musical rehearsals are in full swing, and the cast and crew are doing an incredible job! We can’t wait to see their hard work come to life during the performances on December 6th and 7th! We hope you’ll join us for these special events!
Today, we had the privilege of honoring our military-connected families with a breakfast celebration. This event provided a meaningful opportunity to express our gratitude for their service and foster connections among our youth. We are thankful for the sacrifices these families make and are proud to have them as part of our Holmes community.
Additionally, we are excited to share our “10 Reasons Holmes Stands Out” here.” list, which highlights the unique qualities that make our school a vibrant and welcoming place for all. We take pride in celebrating the diversity and rich cultural tapestry that defines our community.
Hidden in Plain Sight Program
The Annandale HS PTSA invites you to “Hidden In Plain Sight” on Monday, November 18 at 6:30pm in Clausen Hall. The Hidden in Plain Sight (HIPS) program is a unique in-person, interactive program for adults to be educated about the signs of risky behavior in teens and young adults. It touches on drug and alcohol use, vaping, mental health and behavioral concerns, risky sexual behaviors, trending "challenges” and more. Following the HIPS presentation, representatives from The Chris Atwood Foundation and Community Services Board (CSB) will provide additional information about resources available within our community. CSB will also be offering Narcan training to anyone who is interested. For more information and to register for this free event please visit https://bit.ly/hipsahs11182024.
Thank you for your continued involvement and support!
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Serena Giron
Principal

November is National Family Engagement Month!
This month reminds us that families are children’s first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Over 35 years of research shows that the most effective way to increase student achievement is for families to be actively involved in their children's education.
The FCPS Family Academy is where families like yours can learn and get support for their child's school journey.

Join the Holmes MS PTA and attend meetings (4th Wednesday of the month; translation services provided)
On December 17th, Annandale will host a Middle School Night for Boys basketball. It will be a triple header game!!! At 4:30PM the freshmen boys play, JV plays at 5:45PM, and varsity at 7:30PM. Students will be able to attend any of these games free if they are accompanied by an adult. Go Atoms!
Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Thursday, December 12, 6:45-8:15 p.m., at Annandale High School Cafeteria.
Please register in advance by clicking on the date. Language interpretation will be available.
If you are unable to attend on this date, view the full list of meetings on the Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage.
Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.
Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.
Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.
FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.
✨ FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.
Our Voices, Our Future: A Multilingual Learners Day of Service is available to FCPS high school students as an opportunity to explore multilingualism as a strength in developing leadership and advocacy skills. The event will be held Saturday, November 16, 9-11:30 a.m., at Edison High School. José Luis Zelaya, who spoke at last year's Multilingual Learners Summit, will be a special guest.
High school students are invited to network with their peers and staff, and learn how their interests and strengths can lead to future success. College and career readiness resources will be available. Students should register in advance and bring their FCPS laptops to the workshop.
Learn more about the event and watch videos from previous multilingual learner events.
