Gift Card Donation Drive

It is hard to believe that we are nearing the holiday season already! We know that this time is exciting for many but can also be very challenging and stressful for some families within our community. In the past, we have been able to support many of our Hayfield families during this time due to the kind donations from our community! On November 18th, we will begin collecting donations for gift cards to big box stores/grocery stores (ex: Walmart, Target, Aldi, Giant, Amazon) until December 18th. Please send in any donations with your student in an envelope marked “Holiday Donations” to be given to your student’s teacher or dropped at the front office. We will ensure these donations go to support our direct community and support our families in having a very happy holiday season!

We appreciate you all so much as you help us make this a memorable season for all of our Hayfield community.

Thank you,
Hayfield Elementary School Counselors

Get 2 Green

Get2Green: Clean Up Event

Get2Green is an FCPS environmental stewardship program. Here at Hayfield, we are working to make a positive impact on our environment through recycling initiatives and other efforts. In our first event, we weeded and cleaned up some of our outdoor spaces. During this next event, we’ll focus on trash pick up around the school grounds and begin work on a campaign to promote the idea of zero waste lunches.

Our event will take place on Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate. Families must be able to pick up their students at 4:30, unless the student is enrolled in SACC.

Please return permission slips to Ms. Taylor or Mr. Pitts by Monday, November 18, 2024 for your 4th-6th grader to participate. A few hard copies were given to each homeroom teacher in grades 4-6 as well for students to bring home. You may email Ms. Taylor or Mr. Pitts with questions.

Federal Impact Aid Forms

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, paper forms were sent home in Thursday Folders this week. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Learn how to activate your SIS ParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type Federal Impact Aid Survey under Issue Description. Or, call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).

Full-Time Advanced Academics Referrals (students in grades 2-6)

Full-Time Services Checklist for Families

For parents interested in referring their child for full-time AAP services, the following documents need to be submitted to AART Avery Rothman (agrothman@fcps.edu) on or before December 15, 2024.
Late submissions cannot be accepted.

  • Full Time Referral Form - REQUIRED (Translated Versions Available)
  • Parent Questionnaire – Optional, but Recommended (Translated Versions Available)
  • A Maximum of 2 pages of work samples (digital scans) - Optional
  • Additional testing information – Optional

Submitting a referral form for full-time AAP will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of trained professionals will review the portfolio materials to determine eligibility for full-time placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted, after they have been turned in for central selection, by emailing Avery Rothman (agrothman@fcps.edu).

Please see the Full-Time Services Checklist for Families for further guidance, and contact Avery Rothman (agrothman@fcps.edu) with any questions.

For more information, please visit the Advanced Academic Programs website.

Tutoring Resource for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

Holiday Market

The winter holidays are coming! Mark your calendars for our 2024 Holiday Market which will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024 from 5:30-7:30pm. Students will have the opportunity to shop for gifts for friends and family in the cafeteria, and there will be live music, food trucks, and the Craft Market in the library for adults to browse and shop! Traditionally only Hayfield faculty and staff have been vendors at the market in the library, but this year we are excited to open up the opportunity for additional community members to rent a table for a $50 donation to the PTA. This provides a broader opportunity for small businesses in our Hayfield community to sell their goods or services! Keep your eyes open for the volunteer sign up and shopper sign up which will be sent out in the coming week. To reserve a table, please email Amy at holidaymarket@hespta.com.

Spirit Wear

New spirit wear will be available for purchase at the upcoming PTA meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21. We have new designs this year; 3 styles of t-shirts, a hoodie, pajamas pants and baseball hats. Spirit wear will also be sold at the Holiday Market on Dec. 6Limited quantities are available, so shop early for best availability.

The online store will open with the remaining items following the Holiday Market. Questions? Email: spiritwear@hespta.com

Celebrations and Traditions

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
