Dear Dranesville Families:
I have had a wonderful time visiting schools, attending athletic and other county events, and continuing to engage in the work of the School Board.
Last June, the FCPS Chief Academic Officer shared Grading Guidance with all secondary schools that would be implemented consistently across all schools this year, SY 24-25. These include directives regarding the use of a zero, grade book weighting, and reassessments. Additionally, in July 2024, the School Board passed a follow-on motion to review and revise Policy 2418: Reporting Student Progress to Parents and Guardians.
As Chair of the Governance Committee, I have been leading the committee through this policy review work. After five committee meetings, the current draft of Policy 2418 was the topic of the November 12th afternoon Work Session. Members asked clarifying questions, shared input from stakeholders, and offered suggestions for improvement. At the next Governance Committee meeting on November 19, we will continue our work and incorporate School Board member input as we work to complete all revisions. Throughout the process I have heard from principals, teachers, parents/caregivers, and students. They have shared their thoughts and opinions regarding how the SY 24-25 Guidelines are working.
I wanted to make sure that parents/caregivers and community members are aware that the first round of Boundary Work Community Meetings are scheduled in each of our six regions. Here are the dates for the Dranesville Region meetings:

During last night's regular board meeting, FCPS recognized our Purple Star Schools. I am proud of every school especially the 10 that reside in Dranesville. Many military families move in across FCPS, and now FCPS has 96 Purple Star Schools that prioritize support and welcoming military children and families reflecting our Strategic Plan’s Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, Empowered. I look forward to celebrating Dr. Reid’s goal to have FCPS a Purple Star District by SY 26-27. Also last night, the School Board recognized our nearly 700 school counseling professionals, including school counselors, Directors of Student Services, and College and Career Specialists. I want to celebrate each of them and all of the mental health experts who work with our students. Thank you for the magic you do with our students every day.
Thank you Principal Basdekis and the Coates ES staff and students for hosting my school visit with VA Senator Boysko, VA Delegate Shin, and Dranesville Supervisor Bierman. He shared how Coates ES is dealing with the rapid increase in student population over the last 3 school years. Teachers and staff shared how the new basal Language arts curriculum is going for their teachers and students as they adopt this new program while simultaneously learning how to use it. They reflected on how it works for all their students while highlighting the difficulties for Special Education students and Multilingual learners. The legislators appreciated learning more on how our staff, teachers, families, and students are engaging in the everyday impacts of the Virginia Literacy Act. At Dr. Reid’s Herndon MS Community conversation, I heard from several Coates ES parents on their concerns about their school’s overcrowding. There are around 400 Coates ES students in 16 temporary classrooms outside of their school building.
Congratulations to the McLean Boys Volleyball team winning the first ever Regional Championship! They will host the State quarterfinals at McLean HS Saturday, November 16 at 3 p.m. vs. Grassfield HS. Come cheer them on! Also, congratulations to the Langley Girls Volleyball team for being the Regional runner-up losing to Chantilly. I attended the Marshall vs Chantilly regional semifinal game and saw how strong Chantilly was playing. While they defeated Langley in the region final, Langley will go on to compete in the state tournament. Good luck to all the remaining fall athletes vying for state championships!

Boundary Review Community Meetings Start Next Week
FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. If you are unable to attend your region's meeting, you may attend another. All meetings will be in person and will follow the same format. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Results from the 2023-24 Fairfax County Youth Survey
The Fairfax County Youth Survey was taken by nearly 40,000 FCPS students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. There were significant strides in several key areas including lowered levels of mental health challenges (rates of stress, sadness, and markers of mental health crises) and substance use — the lowest recorded rates in the last 10 years.

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
National Career Development Month
By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school. Based on the needs of the populations served, each school determines optional courses to be offered.
National Family Engagement Month
National Family Engagement Month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong parental and family support is vital to the well-being and success of students. FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.
Family Academy
The new FCPS Family Academy is a targeted outreach effort to empower and build capacity, connections, cognition, confidence, and awareness through interactive learning experiences, tools, and resources for families in FCPS through a one-stop approach. The Family Academy compiles classes, webinars, workshops, and programs offered by FCPS to help you support your child's needs and learning at home. The Family Orientation Seminar provides information about FCPS and includes a helpful discussion for families who are new to the United States.

Special Education Parent Involvement Survey for SY 2023-24
All parents of school-aged children and youth with disabilities who receive special education services in Virginia are requested to complete the VDOE annual Parent Involvement Survey. This survey is open through December 13, 2024. Please complete one survey for each of your children who received special education services during the 2023-2024 school year.
Special Education Dispute Resolution Survey
The Commission on Youth, a bipartisan legislative commission of the Virginia General Assembly, is conducting a study on how to improve Virginia’s special education dispute resolution system. The Commission is seeking feedback from parents, agency professionals, attorneys, advocates, teachers and others. The Special Education Dispute Resolution Process Survey uses Google Forms. Some workplaces may not allow access to the form so you may need to access the survey from a home computer, library computer, or cell phone. This survey closes on Friday, November 22, 3 p.m.
New Crosswalk Georgetown Pike- Mackall Farms Lane
After constituent advocacy to Supervisor Bierman's office, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Traffic Engineering section evaluated the Langley area near Pine Hill Road and Georgetown Pike for possible safety improvements earlier this fall. VDOT found that a crosswalk could not be placed at the Pine Hill Road and Georgetown Pike intersection, but the next intersection to the east at Mackall Farms Lane and Georgetown Pike would be suitable for a crosswalk. The VDOT has completed construction of the necessary ADA ramp and marked the crosswalk on Georgetown Pike at Mackall Farms Lane.

Speed Camera Program Ready to Expand
Slowing down drivers and improving traffic safety are the objectives of the Speed Camera program, which includes the installation of photo monitoring devices (speed cameras) in school zones. There are currently nine cameras operational throughout the County including Chesterbrook ES. Following the pilot’s success, countywide photo speed enforcement will move forward in two phases. Phase 1, now underway, will include 50 additional photo speed enforcement cameras distributed between school and work zones.

Military Veterans Continue Life of Service by Inspiring Students in JROTC Units
At Herndon High School, two veterans remain committed to service, years after retiring from the military. Retired Coast Guard Captain Jim O’Keefe (above, right), is now the senior Naval science instructor for the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) unit at Herndon High. He has 34 years of military experience and oversees a unit of roughly 200 students. His fellow instructor Aaron Smith (above, left) was a U.S. Navy chef for 22 years. Learn how they are using their military background to prepare FCPS graduates.
Dranesville Students Selected for 2024 All-Virginia Jazz Band and VMEA Senior Honors Choir
Forty-eight students representing 17 Fairfax County high schools and one elementary school have been selected for the 2024 All-Virginia Orff Ensemble, the 2024 All-Virginia Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble, and the 2024 Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Senior Honors Choir. The students will rehearse and perform with other premier musicians from across the state from Tuesday, November 19, through Saturday, November 23, in Norfolk. The performances are free and open to the public.

17 FCPS Schools Recognized on 2024 Advanced Placement School Honor Roll
The College Board announced that 17 FCPS high schools have been named to the Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll. Schools can earn bronze, silver, gold, or platinum distinction. The AP program offers college-level courses and exams that students can take in high school. By taking AP exams, students can earn college credit. The schools named to the AP School Honor Roll included these Dranesville high schools: Herndon HS, Langley HS, McLean HS, Thomas Jefferson HSST, and Westfield HS.
2024 Fairfax County Youth Athletes, Coaches, and Parent Champion of Character Awardees
Youth athletes, coaches and parents were honored at the annual Stephen A. McLaughlin Champions of Character Awards at the Fairfax County Government Center. The annual awards honor county youth, coaches and parents in each magisterial district for extraordinary service in pursuing victory with honor on and off the field of competition.

While we didn't have the MPAartfest due to the renovation of the McLean Central Park, we are featuring art from 10 McLean area schools including: Franklin Sherman ES, Haycock ES, Spring Hill ES, and McLean HS. The artwork is on display on the ramp leading upstairs from the MCC entrance through December 14.
Davis Center Community Work Experience Partners
As you may know, we depend on our wonderful northern Virginia business community to provide work experiences for our students. These active, hands-on learning experiences provide tremendous opportunities for students to build both soft and hard skills in preparation for life after DCC. This year we have grown and are still in need of additional worksites to support our students. MHS DECA Achieves Top Rankings at District Competition- Twenty Highlanders placed Top Four, which earned them an invitation to attend States in Virginia Beach, February 28th – March 2nd, 2025! Good luck and we look forward to seeing your success next year.
McLean Highlander Marching Band wins the USBands Virginia State Championship. They also won all caption awards for Best Music, Best Visual, Best Effect, Best Percussion, and Best Guard.

Virginia College Application Week- Herndon HS took part in the Virginia Department of Education’s Virginia College Application Week (VCAW). We had about 240 seniors participate in VCAW by attending a college app lab session to work on their applications. It is estimated that our students, who submitted 345 applications at an average of $50 per application, saved over $17,000! It was an exciting week for our seniors and the Student Services staff!
Custodial Staff of the Year for 2023-24- They were recognized for their hard work and dedication to the wellbeing of our students and faculty.
Sports Hall of Fame is back up and accepting nominations! In order to be considered for the Herndon Athletic Hall of Fame the nominee must graduated at least 10 years ago or a coach/athletic support staffer who has retired. Attendance Champions Challenge…Because Every Day Counts!
Through the Attendance Champions Challenge, the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) invites schools and 501(c)(3) community organizations to engage young people between the ages of 13 and 19 to identify new ways of understanding barriers to school attendance and engagement, as well as propose creative solutions that build on evidence-based strategies. Young people are also invited to directly submit their ideas to the DOE. The submission deadline for the Attendance Champions Challenge is November 29, 2024, at 9 p.m. (ET).

For this contest, we invite students ages 13 to 19 in middle or high school anywhere in the world to write a personal narrative about a meaningful life experience in 100 words or fewer. Annual Marine Debris Program Art Contest
The NOAA Marine Debris Program holds an annual art contest to reach K-8 students and help raise awareness about marine debris. Marine debris is a global issue and engaging our youth is an important part of addressing the problem. November 16 Events
Our Voices, Our Future: Multilingual Learners’ Day of Service- Nov. 16
Dr. José Luis Zelaya, keynote speaker at the Multilingual Learners’ Summit, will be the featured guest for this MS and HS student workshop. Dr. Zelaya will engage and empower students with the strengths of multilingualism, as students explore leadership skills to plan for future success. All attending FCPS secondary students will earn service learning credit for participating. Students planning to attend should register and bring their FCPS laptop to the event. Light refreshments and family resources will be available for parents/caregivers during the student workshop.

2024 IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair
Parents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School (3020 Gallows Rd, Falls Church). The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports.
Presentations About Financial Aid for College- November 16
College Access Fairfax invites families with current high school seniors to attend virtual presentations on financial aid options. Parents/caregivers and students are encouraged to participate together.
FAFSA Line-by-Line Webinar
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is expected to open in December. Learn what questions are asked, line-by-line, and what information you will need to complete the form on Saturday, November 16, at 10 a.m.
Fairfax Recycles Day and Touch-a-Truck Event- November 16
Fairfax County Solid Waste Sustainability Team is hosting a Drop-Off and Touch-a-Truck event on Saturday, November 16, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Gerry Hyland Government Center parking lot. Bring your hard-to-recycle items, see cool trucks, and enjoy a warm beverage and donut. All Fairfax County residents are invited to attend and learn more about recycling and efforts to achieve Zero Waste by 2040. Visit the event website for a list of acceptable materials to drop off.
Haycock/Longfellow Park Community Events- November 17
Trees do an excellent job storing carbon and cooling the earth. Join in a community effort to save trees from invasive vines in the Haycock Longfellow Park (which is behind the Haycock playground) on Sunday, November 17, 2-4 p.m. We’ll be led by trained Tree Rescuers. No prior experience or great physical strength necessary. All ages are welcome although elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult. Directions to the meet-up location available once you sign up. Bring garden tools and gloves.
Understand Invasive Species and their Harm
Invasive species can lead to the extinction of native plants and animals, reduce biodiversity, and permanently change habitats. Find out what Fairfax County is doing to limit invasive species’ damaging effects, what you can do to make a difference and how to recognize, prevent, control, and report them.
Calm Amid the Chaos: Being the Parent Teens Need in a Competitive, Distracted, Divisive World - November 20
The Safe Community Coalition is pleased to welcome back Ned Johnson, best-selling co-author of The Self-Driven Child. Join us Wednesday, November 20 at 7pm at the McLean Community Center’s Alden Theatre (1234 Ingleside Ave, McLean) for Calm Amid the Chaos: Being the Parent Teens Need in a Competitive, Distracted, Divisive World. Our 2nd Annual Winter Bazaar is jingling its way into Forestville on November 23, 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. The school will be buzzing with handcrafted jewelry, delicious food, toys, home decor, and holiday treasures for all!

Third Annual Langley Crew & McLean Crew Turkey Trot 5K- November 30
Join the Langley Crew and McLean Crew Teams for our 3rd annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 30, 2024. Starting from Langley High School, the scenic route will take you through beautiful Georgetown Pike, offering breathtaking views along the way. Don't forget to bring your camera to capture the picturesque moments! After crossing the finish line, stick around for some post-race celebrations. There will be treats, music, and plenty of laughter to go around.

Wolf Trap Holiday Sing-a-Long- December 7
One of our region's most beloved holiday traditions is returning to the Filene Center on Saturday, December 7: 3 (doors open at 2 p.m.)- 4:30 p.m. The Colvin Run ES students will be appearing on stage with other choirs accompanied by the U.S. Marine Corps Band. McLean Winterfest Parade Returns December 8

The Unruly Theatre Project Auditions- December 17
We are a professional teen improv group, and we are holding auditions for the 2024-25 company on December 17. Auditions are open to all 8th- 11th graders. Access (the) Unruly Theatre Project Mid-Year Auditions Survey to register. Rehearsals are twice a week, with (paid!) performances throughout the year.
