Inova Trauma Survivor's presented life changing experiences

EMT, Medical Assistant and Exploring Health Science students had the great benefit to learn about caring and compassionate care from members of the Inova Trauma Survivors Network.  Whether a nurse, social worker, EMT or any other healthcare worker it's important to hear the stories of patients who have been in horrific situations to know better how to or not to act, what to say or not and how to care with compassion.  JD, Jimmy and Shira shared their heartfelt stories of resilience and care with the students who asked amazing questions of their experience.

Students in VR Goggles

GW's Immersive Learning Center provides great simulated hands on experiences for students to learn

Using VR Goggles and simulated exercises, Plum Center nursing students are able to learn about the heart and chest cavity through these simulated exercises in the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Immersive Learning Center.  In addition, students learned how to successfully support an accident victim by learning proper PPE on scene, the protocols for accessing a patient and proper stabilization for transport.  This learning center can be reconfigured to "support critical thinking and applied learning to maximize student learning and engagement" with various medical experiences.

Students preform triage on an accident victim

EMT students learn hands-on patient care

EMT students learn hands-on patient assessments and triage

To prepare to be an EMT, students must preform critical hands-on skills until they are comfortable and knowledgeable of the procedures necessary to provide life saving care.  In this classroom, hands-on skills and real life experiences are part of every day learning.  In addition to in class learning, EMT students receive patient contacts through ride alongs with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue as well as clinical experiences at Inova Fair Oaks ER.
