November Is National Family Engagement Month

Family Engagement Month is a time to remember that families are children’s first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers.

The FCPS Family Academy was created to support the continued success and well-being of each and every student within the FCPS community. The Academy offers a variety of positive and engaging learning opportunities and meaningful connections to transform the FCPS experience into a welcoming environment for all families.

Upcoming Events

  • November 18 - Chipotle Restaurant Night, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • November 20 - PTA Meeting (virtual), 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

We need your help to achieve our $5,000 goal and make this Turkey Trot a huge success!

The Turkey Trot fundraiser will run now through Friday, November 29.  On November 21, before the Thanksgiving luncheon, students will have the chance to run as many laps as they can. This is not only a chance to stay active but also to reflect on what they’re grateful for, all while raising funds that will directly benefit our school and students.

The proceeds from this event will help fund amazing initiatives, including field trips, classroom libraries, a new school sign (a long-term goal we can all be excited about) and future Bush Hill community activities.

Classes with the most funds raised and most laps will receive prizes!

1st Place - Pizza Party

2nd Place - Dance Party

3rd Place - Extra Recess

When we achieve our school-wide goal of $5,000 raised, we will have a EGGstra fun SURPRISE!!

How it works

  • Now - November 21 - Students set lap goals and secure donations. People who donate can make a pledge for each lap run, or a flat donation.
  • November 21 - In-person Fun Run! We will have on-site areas to drop off donations at the Thanksgiving Luncheon. Parents are welcome to cheer on your student at the Fun Run and we need volunteers to help with marking laps!
  • November 21 - 29 - Return donations collected via cash/check. Make checks payable to Bush Hill Elementary PTA (please note the class grade and teacher). Donations can also be dropped off to the Main Office. The online site will close for donations November 29.

How to collect pledges/donations

Your student will receive instructions in their Tuesday Folders November 12. We encourage you to register now online to start collecting pledges right away!. This year Bush Hill PTA is proud to partner with VA and National PTA to participate in the Reflections program. Reflections  engages students and their families in arts education activities by encouraging students to explore the arts for fun and recognition. Reflections provides an opportunity for students to express their creativity in one of 6 artistic categories:

  • Dance Choreography
  • Film Production
  • Literature
  • Music Compositions
  • Photography
  • Visual Art

The Reflections theme for 2024-2025 is “Accepting Imperfections.”

Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6 students are encouraged to submit original works of art expressing this year’s theme; Reflections art works are being accepted now through Tuesday December 3. Please see the link to the student entry package below for detailed submission information. Contact PTA if there are additional questions/concerns, ptabushhillelementary@gmail.com; please put “Reflections” in the subject line.

Miss The Math & Literacy Coffee?

On Thursday, October 24th Ms. Breen the Math Coach and Mrs. Kerr the Reading Specialist held a Parent Coffee to talk about assessments utilized within FCPS and here at Bush Hill.  Here is a link to the recording of this parent coffee along with helpful links to learn more about assessments for math and literacy. Literacy Resources for Families Webpage

A new Literacy Resources for Families webpage has been published to the external web to provide families with information about how to support their children with developing literacy knowledge and skills at home. It provides valuable information about the reading and writing resources to be used at home, the VALLSS, Reading Plans, guidance for Parent Teacher Conferences, and training available through the Family Academy.

Fall Student Testing Results

Screening Assessment Reports Available in SIS ParentVUE

Each fall, FCPS students take part in screening assessments for reading and mathematics to identify strengths and areas for support. Score reports for families are posted in ParentVUE in the “Documents” section, generally about one month after testing has been completed.

  • iReady reports in grades 1-8 and Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) reports in grades 1-3 are available in ParentVUE now
  • VALLSS and Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) reports for kindergarteners will be available by Friday, November 15, and for pre-K students by Friday, December 6
  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth reports for grades 6-12 will be available by Friday, December 13, following an extension to the fall testing window.

Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about student tests at each grade level, including what each test is for and when each test takes place. Caregivers may follow up with their children’s teachers for more information about how they use test results to support student success.

Please Complete Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to complete a Federal Impact Aid Survey as soon as possible. The form is available in ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Hear from FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid and Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander Col. David Stewart about why this federal program is so important for our schools.

Please complete this form for each school-aged child in your household. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. The funds support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.
