fall parade

Fun at our Fall Parade!

Dear Churchill Road families,

What a fabulous end to the first quarter.  Students, parents and families loved perusing all the books at our annual book fair, our first and third graders took a field trip to the Alden Theater and our entire student body enjoyed a beautiful day for our fall parade.

School was closed on Friday for Diwali and All Saints Day and Dios dos Muertos – we hope all who celebrate these days enjoyed them.

As we begin the second quarter, we look forward to International Night on November 15 and our Thanksgiving luncheon on November 22.

We look forward to seeing you at one or both of these upcoming events.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

thanksgiving day

Thanksgiving Luncheon - Friday, November 22 Join Us and Volunteer

Please join your child and their class in celebrating Thanksgiving Lunch. We ask that you kindly RSVP by November 8.  Although not required to attend, your RSVP will assist our cafeteria staff have a general idea of attendance to prepare enough food for the day. Thank you!

If you are joining your child for lunch, please be sure that your child’s MySchoolBucks lunch account has sufficient funds to pay for both you and your child because we will not be able to accept cash or charge cards that day.  This is the easiest way to keep the lunch lines short.

The cost for lunch is $4.75 for adults and $3.25 for students.

Check out the Thanksgiving Lunch Schedule to see when your child will be in the cafeteria.

Volunteers are needed to help out in the cafeteria outside of your child’s assigned lunch time to either serve food in our kitchen or be a host in our dining room. All parent volunteers will get a free lunch! We would be very THANKFUL for your help: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0A45ACAB2AA7FC1-51858440-thanksgiving

Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Full-Time Services Referral Deadline

The Spring Full-Time AAP Screening is available to families of students in Grades 2 through 6.  The deadline for submitting Referral Forms is December 15th.  It is helpful to turn them in December 9th - 13th if not before, to allow AARTs time to confirm that all required parts have been submitted before winter break begins.  Families will be notified if any additional required information is needed or errors are found.

You can find the Referral Form and the optional Parent/Guardian Questionnaire here:

https://www.fcps.edu/academics/advanced-academic-programs-aap/forms-advanced-academic-program-aap

You may email Full-Time referrals and optional materials (questionnaire and 2 one-page, front-side-only work samples from home) directly to Esther Lee and Christine Plagata-Neubauer, eclee@fcps.edu and cmplagataneu@fcps.edu, in one email. You will receive a confirmation email within 1-2 business days.

Learning About Diwali

Diwali

Thank you to second grade parent, Mrs. Kadia, who shared information about Diwali with Ms. Finger's second graders. She gave them an overview about the holiday, read a story, and they made paper diyas (lanterns).

Character Strengths Focus

The next character strength our school community is focusing on is Bravery

Bravery  means you act with mental, moral, or physical strength even when you know things are difficult or scary.

To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.
