Roadrunner Rundown
November 6, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families
We hope you had a fun and restful long weekend. Teachers were busy on Monday and Tuesday holding Parent/Teachers Conferences and preparing for the 2nd quarter. We are excited about the opportunities the new quarter will bring for your children to grow in a variety of ways while they deepen their roots of kindness!
We have launched a new initiative in the cafeteria to encourage and reinforce positive behavior. Our students are “Aiming for the Stars” by working as a class to earn rewards for positive behavior. We are excited to celebrate the good behavior of our students in the cafeteria by providing Friday Lunch Live, a display of any age appropriate music (classical, jazz, pop etc.), during their lunch time on Fridays. Are you a musician interested in performing for our students? If so, please email Karlen McClain at ksmcclain@fcps.edu.
We hope to see you at the Runathon this Friday as you cheer, walk or run with your children.
- 10:00 - grades Pre-K, 2, 3
- 11:15 – grades 4, 5, and 6
- 1:45 – grade K, 1
There will be no school on Monday, November 11 as we observe Veterans Day.
Have a great week!

School Events and Information
Attendance Matters- MRES Can Help
The beginning of the 2nd quarter is a good time to look at your attendance patterns and make changes as needed to keep regular school attendance a priority. Please contact the school if you have questions about attendance or would like help from a staff member. MRES and other community agencies are working together to offer help for the whole family.
Picture Make-Up Day and Retakes - November 13
Please let your child’s teacher know if you would like your child to have their picture retaken or taken for the first time because they missed the original picture day on Wednesday, November 13. Families who were not happy with their original photo and ordered a picture package are required to return the package on picture day. Pictures may be pre-ordered online and will be available for viewing online approximately two weeks following our school's photo day. Questions about ordering? Email Victor O'Neill at underclass@vosphoto.com.
Language Arts Curriculum and Grading
With the introduction of the new language arts curriculum, progress reports this year might look different than in the past. With our new Benchmark curriculum, rather than teach discreet skills each quarter, every skill is taught every quarter and continually reinforced and built upon. Students are not expected to have mastered any skill by the end of first quarter. Because it is the first quarter and most skills have just been introduced, do not be alarmed if you do not see any 4s on a first quarter report card in language arts. This does not necessarily mean your child needs extra support in that area, just that we have only begun to practice the skill. Likewise, please also remember that a "progress report" is different than a traditional report card and progress is what students know at a point in time rather than an average of performance over an entire period. You can read more on the FCPS website.
Student Thanksgiving Lunch in Cafeteria
The cafeteria will be serving Thanksgiving Lunch on Thursday, November 21 to students who choose to buy that day. The menu can be found here.
3-Hour Release Days
Thank you for your support with our second 3-hour early release last Monday. Please note, our next 3-hour early release is December 9, not November 25, as originally planned. The other 3-hour early release dates are:
- February 24
- March 17
- April 28

The completion of the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid is critical for FCPS to obtain its share of federal funds. Parents/ guardians need to complete the survey online through their Parent VUE account by November 12. Literary Resources for Families
A new Literacy Resources for Families webpage has been published to provide families with information about how to support their children with developing literacy knowledge and skills at home. It provides valuable information about reading and writing resources to be used at home, the VALLSS, Reading Plans, guidance for Parent Teacher Conferences, and training available through the Family Academy.
PTA Update
Runathon is this Friday!
The 14th Annual Runathon is Friday, November 8. Students, teachers, and parents/caregivers will be running laps during the school day to earn money for our school! This is our ONE main fundraiser of the year and money raised supports the programs throughout the year. Your contributions will help support every student, teacher, and staff member at Marshall Road! Please visit our Runathon website to learn more and make a tax-deductible donation! We hope you can come out and join us to run laps with your student or cheer on our runners. Simply come to the track behind the school at your student's assigned time. Questions? Please email runathon@marshallroadpta.org.
Note: Every student will receive a free Runathon shirt to wear to the Runathon. Some teachers will send the t-shirts home with students on Thursday and others will have students keep them at school, so students don't forget to wear them. Please send a reusable water bottle with your student on Friday.

MRES Staff Spotlight
Ms. Kendall, our STEAM teacher, has won the PTA priority parking spot for the week! Although this is Ms. Kendall’s first year at MRES, it is her 5th year teaching. As the STEAM teacher, she is able to work with so many of the students at Marshall Road. She loves seeing and hearing their creativity and excitement. Her hobbies include baking, gardening, and spending time outdoors by regularly going hiking and camping. Ms. Kendall is a mechanical engineer and a fluent Spanish speaker.
