National Family Engagement Month
This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.
FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.
Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development. We invite you to call or email Mary Specht, Clearview’s fabulous Family Liaison with questions.

***We are excited to announce that Clearview will be offering Club de Diversidad Cultural (Cultural Diversity Club) after-school on Tuesdays for students in grades 2-3. The club will be facilitated in Spanish and will explore different Latin American cultures through literature, art, food, games, music, and dance. We hope to enroll 50% native Spanish speakers and 50% native speakers of other languages. Please email Assistant Principal Rachel Charlton if you would like for your child to be considered for this club.
***We are excited to announce that Robotics Club will be available for students in grades 5-6 on Tuesdays. Sixth grade students who indicated interest for Robotics Club this fall and did not get selected will have first priority. If you are interested in your child participating in Robotics Club, please email Assistant Principal Rachel Charlton.
If your child is in grade 1, please consider participation in INOVA’s Healthy Plate Club on Tuesdays 3:45-4:45 PM. Transportation is not provided. This club has the capacity for nine additional first grade students. If you are interested, please email Assistant Principal Rachel Charlton.
Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates
Clearview teachers and staff have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we determine which students need extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).
Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.
This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.
We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!
Calling All Yellow Jackets to Join the Herndon Homecoming Parade!
We hope to see you at the Herndon Homecoming parade on November 9 at 9:30 AM in the town of Herndon. Students from all grades are invited to dress in yellow and black and march in the parade with sixth graders this year. Students marching in the parade must be accompanied by an adult and should plan to arrive at Herndon Middle School no later than 9:15 AM.
Birthday Celebrations
|
|
If you celebrate Birthdays in your family, we are happy to have the class sing Happy Birthday, announce your child’s name on WBZZ morning news show, and provide a Happy Birthday pencil to your child, as well.
If you are planning to send in something special for your child to share with classmates, we ask that you consider non-food items so that all students can be included. Some families send in pencils, erasers, or stickers, for example.

These special days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants throughout the world. |

National Career Development Month
By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school. Based on the needs of the populations served, each school determines optional courses to be offered. 🔍 Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity
FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.
Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites their child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Talk to your student about their Digital Footprint
In today's digital age, it's crucial for parents to understand the concept of a digital footprint. Every online action, from posting photos to commenting on social media, contributes to a child's digital identity. This online presence can have long-term implications for their personal and professional lives. Open and honest conversations about online safety, privacy settings, and responsible digital citizenship are essential. By guiding children in making informed decisions about their online activities, parents can help them build a positive digital reputation while protecting their personal information.
