What's Happening Mount Eagle

November 1, 2024

A Message from Ms. Kirkland

This year, students across Fairfax County are learning Language Arts through a common curriculum called Benchmark Advance. In all 142 elementary schools, teachers are engaged in learning together as they take on the huge tasks of implementing this new curriculum. Here at Mount Eagle, teachers meet weekly to plan and reflect on our work so far, to review our student data, and make adjustments to our instruction. We are excited to see the ways in which our students are getting used the routines in this curriculum and growing as readers and writers. I am so proud of the hard work of our teachers and students as we make these changes together for the benefit of all students.

Parents should be on the lookout for some of the instructional materials from these units coming home.  This includes graphic organizers and writing products, as well as student workbooks and magazines.  If you have any questions about your child's work, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher.

Many parents ask how they can support their child's literacy development. One thing that hasn't changed as we have made this shift in our instruction is the importance of encouraging children to read for enjoyment. Please continue to encourage your child to read every day.  Set times for screens to be off and books or magazines to be enjoyed. If you need help accessing reading materials for your child, our school librarian, Charlene Murphy, or your child's teacher can help.

Finally, this Monday and Tuesday are workdays for teachers.  We hope you have a wonderful and relaxing weekend, and don't forget to make time to vote if you haven't already!

Have a fabulous weekend, Mount Eagle!

Federal Impact Aid Surveys

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.

For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, schools will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For more information, please watch this video on Impact Aid and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Veteran's Day Celebration

There are several opportunities for families to participate in Veteran's Day celebrations on November 7.

Flag Raising Event: At 8:20am, student speakers will recognize the service of veterans, and music will be played during our flag raising

All School Meeting: At 8:45am, veteran family members are invited to join our All School Morning Meeting.  Students will have the chance to introduce their veteran family member to our community so the entire Mount Eagle community can express their gratitude.

Bingo Night is Coming!

Our annual Bingo Night is coming on Friday, November 15th from 6:00-8:00pm.  PTO is looking for donations of toys, crafts, and games to create prize baskets for bingo winners.  Their goal is to create as many baskets as possible so we spread out the fun!

Mount Eagle staff will also be raffling off staff experiences, like donuts with Ms. Weber, or knitting with Ms. Weiner!  We can't wait to see you there!

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.
