FCPS Elementary Language Arts Grading
ES Grading Update for 2024-2025
This year, FCPS has new ways of teaching reading and writing to our students. We also have new ways to know if students need extra support and how we can best help them. Schools will still use the same 4-point scale to assign grades; please refer to the Grading Guidelines for more details.
Starting in November 2024, your child’s progress report grades may look different due to the changes below.
NOTE: Students are not expected to master all of their grade-level standards until later in the year. By monitoring grades in each standard the whole school year, you can get a clearer picture of areas where they need to grow most, as well as their overall progress in literacy. Contact your child's teacher with any questions about your child’s progress report.
New Language Arts Curriculum
- Before: the FCPS Planning and Pacing Guide covered different standards each quarter.
- Current: FCPS now uses Benchmark Advance. It covers all standards each quarter, building towards mastery. Fewer standards will be marked Not Taught (NT) or Not Assessed (NA)
New K-3 Literacy Screener
- Before:
- Kindergarten: PALS
- Grades 1-6: iReady
- Current:
New Virginia Standards of Learning
- Before: Measured overlapping skills on any text. Sometimes standards were assessed with below-grade level text.
- Current: The Virginia Board of Education approved the 2024 English Standards of Learning at their March 28, 2024, business meeting. The new standards measure separate skills using on-grade level text. Grades reflect how well students meet grade-level expectations
Thanksgiving Luncheon at Providence
Join us in November for our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon.
Parents with students in kindergarten through 2nd grade may join their students for a turkey feast on Wednesday, November 20th.
Parents with students in grades 3 -6, may join their students for a turkey feast on Thursday, November 21st.
Parents may purchase a school lunch for $4.75 at the door.
Grade Level Lunch Times
Wednesday, November 20th:
- Grade 1 (10:45-11:40am)
- Grade 2 (11:25-12:20pm)
- Grade K (12:05-1:00pm)
Thursday, November 21st:
- Grade 4 (10:30-11:15am)
- Grade 6 (11:15-12:00pm)
- Grade 5 (12:00-12:45pm)
- Grade 3 (12:45-1:35pm)

Title I Engagement Policy & School Improvement and Innovation Plan
Title I Engagement Policy and Compact is distributed to all caregivers. Caregivers have opportunities to provide comments and feedback on the policy and compact through PTA meetings, the Annual Title I Meeting, School Events, and our family liaisons as well as the link below.
Comments are submitted with the school’s policy and compact to FCPS central offices and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). This policy and compact are made available to the broader school community through the school website.

Federal Impact Aid Forms
Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. AAP Connections
AAP Connections: This quarter, students learned about and applied the Critical and Creative Thinking strategy: Point of View. You can learn more about Critical and Creative Thinking strategies on the FCPS AAP website. Check your digital Tuesday folders at the end of each quarter for the Critical and Creative Thinking Choice Board, filled with activities you can use at home to build your child’s creative and critical thinking skills.

The Fairfax Ballet
You are formally invited to step into the enchanting world of “The Nutcracker”
This holiday season, let the Fairfax Ballet Company transport you to the enchanting world of “The Nutcracker,” featuring Emily Kitka as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Aarón Sanz as her Cavalier and the Snow King, both soloists from the renowned New York City Ballet.
