Dear Union Mill Families,
Thank you to ML Real Estate for an amazing Fall Family Cookout last week. It was great to see so many families connecting with one another prior to the long weekend.
As we embark on the second quarter, we are excited for two events next week. Our chorus will be honoring our Veterans on Tuesday, November 12th for a Veterans Day Concert at 7:30 pm.
We are also excited to host our Math and Science night on Tuesday, November 12th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Families will have the opportunity to engage in math games courtesy of Mathnasium, science experiments from the Children's Science Center and engage with students from the Centreville Robotics Club!
As a reminder, Monday, November 11th is Veterans Day and a student holiday. We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, November 12th.

Veterans Day Concert
The Union Mill Chorus will honor the veterans in our community with a short concert on Tuesday November 12th at 7:30 pm in the school cafeteria. Our concert will begin with local scouts presenting the colors followed by a performance from our chorus. Families, friends and veterans are welcome to attend.

Math and Science Night
We are excited to announce our upcoming Math and Science Night at Union Mill on November 12th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM! This event will be a fantastic opportunity for our students and their families to explore the wonders of math and science through engaging, hands-on activities.
To make this event a success, we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help facilitate the activities. Volunteer opportunities will begin at 5:00 and end at 7:30.
The best part? No prep is required! All materials will be provided by Mathnasium of Centreville and The Children's Science Center. Your role will simply involve guiding families through the various stations and ensuring everyone has a great time.

Book Fair 2024
Our school book fair will be setting up on November 15th then open for sales from November 18th - November 22nd. Volunteers are needed to help with setup and take down as well as helping students with wish lists, running the cash registers and helping out at our evening event on November 20th. Pyramid Chorus Concert
Thank you to our music department and all of our 5th and 6th grade chorus students who participated in last evenings Centreville Pyramid Chorus Concert! It was amazing to see our current Union Mill Bears and our former Union Mill Bears who attend Liberty Middle School and Centreville High School to perform.
Give Thanks and Give Back – 5th Annual Thanksgiving Meal Box Food Drive
We look forward to our annual Thanksgiving Meal Box Food Drive on Wednesday, November 20th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at Union Mill. If you are interested in supporting a family in need, complete the following Sign Up Genius. Meal box drop off will take place from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at the Union Mill Kiss & Ride loop near the outdoor learning garden. Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.
Schools will provide paper forms to families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE by Monday, November 11. Paper forms should be returned by Monday, December 4.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Register for ParentVUE
Learn how to activate your SISParentVUE account, so you can easily submit your survey and have access to other helpful information about your child. Technical support for using ParentVUE or submitting the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Select SISParent in the Application dropdown menu and type Federal Impact Aid Survey in the Issue Description section. You may also call the Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS).
Outstanding Staff Nominations
Are you ready to brag about our Union Mill Community? Please reflect on the Awesomeness you work with and experience daily at Union Mill and consider nominating a staff member for an Outstanding Staff Award! Submissions can now be entered by clicking HERE until Friday November 8.
You may nominate an employee in one or more categories by completing the following nomination form. All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW AND AGREE TO THE NOMINATION!!!
The individual sections have more information regarding the criteria for each of these awards and the eligibility requirements are below:

Outstanding Teacher – a teacher or librarian with 3 or more years of experience

Outstanding New Teacher – a teacher or librarian with less than 3 years of experience

Outstanding New Principal – a building principal with less than 3 years of experience

Outstanding Leader – at least one year of experience in current position - Assistant and Associate Principals, DSA, DSS

Outstanding Professional Employee – these positions could include School-Based Technology Specialist, Assessment Coach, Career Center Specialist, Instructional Coach, Psychologist, Social Worker, School Counselor, Safety and Security Specialist, or Resource Teacher who serves in a non-instructional or administrative role in the school

Outstanding Operational Employee - at least one year of experience in current position - Administrative and Office Staff, Safety and Security Assistant, Custodial Staff, Food Service Staff, IA, PHA, PHTA, All Parent Liaisons Note:

6th Grade Band Day
The Liberty Bands are inviting all CVES/CRES/UMES/BRES/CPES Students to our 6th Grade Band Day on Friday, November 15. Students can come to Liberty for a fun afternoon of making music, and meeting Mr. LaBrie. Students from all our feeder schools will rehearse together and put on a concert in just a few hours! A pizza dinner will be provided.
The event starts at 4:30, and there will be a concert at 8 pm. This is a great way for students to experience middle school and meet one of their future teachers. Please consider joining us! It will be a great night!

Early Release Mondays
Thank you to all families for a successful early release on Monday. Our next early release will be on Monday, December 9th. We will be reaching out in mid-November to confirm your preference on childcare and transportation. If you need to update your preference, please complete the form included in the letter. This will allow us to plan for staffing and student safety for our next early release.
As a reminder, the Centreville Pyramid, which includes Union Mill Elementary, will have the following three-hour early release days. On these days, students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.

- February 24
- March 17
- April 28
- May 19

PTA Memberships are only good for one year. Members get PTA information first, discounts and benefits at PTA-sponsored events, and are the first to know about volunteer opportunities at the school!
