Dr. Christine Ritter, Principal

A Message from Principal Ritter

Dear Kings Glen Families,

As we approach Veterans Day, my heart fills with gratitude for the sacrifices made by our nation's heroes. As the daughter of a veteran and the granddaughter of a World War II veteran, I have a deep personal appreciation for the courage and dedication of those who have served our country.

This Veterans Day, let us take a moment to honor the brave men and women who have defended our freedoms. We encourage our students and their families to express our gratitude for our Veterans.  At Kings Glen, students will be learning about Veterans Day throughout this week and are encouraged to share photos of family members who are Veterans for our Honor Wall.

Lost and Found

Please remember to label clothing items, lunchboxes, water bottles, and whatever else you think your child may leave behind somewhere. If there's a name in it or on it, Kings Glen Staff will do their best to get it back to the owner. If not, it will go into the Lost and Found pile. Items not picked up by November 26th will be collected and donated.  Please encourage your child to check the Lost and Found frequently, especially as the seasons change. Thanks for your help in making sure all items return home to where they belong!

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Missing School Over the Holidays

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is truly unavoidable, families are to complete a Request for a Prearranged Absence Form. The Prearranged Absence form does not necessarily mean the absence is excused.  Schoolwork “packets” cannot make up for the interaction and learning that happens in the classroom, and cannot be provided to families in advance of vacations. Visit the FCPS website for more attendance resources.
