Dear Shrevewood Families,
Thank you to the parents who attended our Parent Coffee last Friday. We learned about all of the wonderful things our counselors are doing with your students. We also had time for an open chat to share ideas and ask questions. One idea that came out of our discussion was related to providing additional resources to families. You will notice in this week’s Wise Words that there is a weekly resource section. Each week, we will add a helpful resource to share related to the happenings at Shrevewood. This week, we have included information about the Second Step curriculum which is a program that our counselors use for lessons in classrooms. As we continue to plan for future Parent Coffees, we would love to hear your ideas about topics you would like to discuss. Please fill out this one question Google Form to provide your input.
As a reminder, FCPS will be closed for Diwali, All Saints Day, and Día de los Muertos on Friday, November 1st. Students will also have Monday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 5th, as student holidays. We will be so excited to welcome everyone back to school on Wednesday, November 6th! Don’t forget to move your clocks back one hour this weekend as daylight savings time will end. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Katie Vandawalker, Principal
Dan Reichard, Assistant Principal
Our school has been selected to participate in a pilot program for the FCPS Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.
A limited number of classes in grades 3-6 will be selected to participate. However, all students in participating grades, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email. We will administer the survey in selected classes on December 3. Any student may take the survey at home if preferred. You will receive a communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out via email if you choose.
We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan which focus on amplifying student voices and experiences, as we work toward meeting plan goals.
Please fill out the Federal Impact Aid Survey online through ParentVUE today!
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is eligible for Federal Impact Aid grants due to the federal presence in our area. The grants from these programs will become part of FCPS' general operating budget. They are critical to ensuring that students receive an excellent education. FCPS anticipates receiving approximately $4,000,000 in Impact Aid funds. FCPS uses the survey for Impact Aid to identify federally connected students.
The Impact Aid survey is available online through ParentVUE. Families without ParentVUE can request a paper copy of the survey from school. FCPS staff will process the information with the utmost confidentiality.
Here is a link to instructions to access the survey in ParentVUE: https://www.fcps.edu/impact
We are looking for parents to assist Mrs. Done and the Green Team in student-centered initiatives! Green Teams meet during lunch and recess on Fridays, but there are ways to support outside of the school day as well. For more information, please contact April Done at ardone@fcps.edu.
Grades K-3: 10:00 a.m. - 10:40 a.m.
Grades 4-6: 3:00 p.m. - 3:40 p.m.
We invite all veterans and their families to join us for this meaningful event.
We would love to have veterans from our community come to Shrevewood to share their stories and experiences. Your voices are invaluable, and we believe our students can learn so much from your service. If you are interested in speaking, please let us know. If you are unable to attend but would still like to be part of our celebration, we invite you to share pictures of the veterans in your family.
Please send any photos you would like us to include, along with a brief description of your service, by filling out this Google Form or by contacting Kaylin Daniels via email (KLDaniels@fcps.edu) or Talking Points.
This assembly is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the sacrifices made by those who have served our country.
Due to limited space, we can only accommodate veterans and their immediate family at this time.
Thank you for your service, and we hope to see you there!
We are looking forward to our Thanksgiving Lunch with families at Shrevewood E.S. on Thursday, November 21!
Please RSVP by Thursday, Oct. 31, using this link.
Please RSVP if you would like to attend the Shrevewood Thanksgiving Lunch with your child. Student meals are $3.25, additional meals for any family members attending can be purchased for $4.75.
Student meals will be charged to student lunch accounts. Please make sure your child has money in their MySchoolBucks lunch account if they are purchasing a student lunch.
NEW INFO! Parents and students can both use the student's lunch account to pay for lunch in the cafeteria line. Parents will need to make sure there are sufficient funds in their student's MySchoolBucks lunch account to pay for the adult meal(s) and student's meal.
We would like to encourage you to pay for adult lunches using the student's MySchoolBucks account. This will be the fastest and easiest way to expedite the number of guests expected on this day. If you are unable to use MySchoolBucks, cash will be accepted, but exact change will be required. Checks and credit cards will not be accepted.

Next week, our school community will focus on the character strength of bravery.
Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgment; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting. According to Socrates and Plato, forethought separates acts of valor from acts of rashness. This means that bravery isn’t simply fearlessness, but instead the overcoming of fear.
Bravery can take many forms. Physical bravery involves overcoming fear of bodily injury or death. Moral bravery occurs when an individual does what he/she believes is right in the face of social and/or financial consequences. Mental bravery occurs when people overcome their everyday fears and anxieties.
To practice and encourage this character strength at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed three hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.
The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:
- September 23
- October 28
- December 9 (Changed from November 25)
- February 24
- March 17
- April 28
- May 19
Additional information can be found on the FCPS Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu.
Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your child’s well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.
Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.
Students, families, and staff throughout FCPS and in our school community will use Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as our learning management system. Here is what you need to know:
You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to log in to Schoology.
As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast will be $1.75. Lunch will be $3.25, milk $0.60. Money can be added to your child(ren)’s accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com. You may also write a check to Shrevewood Food Services and deliver it to our Food Services Manager. During the school year, you can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://linqconnect.com/public/menu/ESSF44.
Free and Reduced-Price Status
Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September. A new application must be filled out each new school year. Forms are available online now: https://www.fcps.edu/frm. Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September. Call (703) 813-4800 if you need help. This application must be completed for eligible students to receive free meals.
