Roadrunner Rundown
October 28, 2024
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
Students and staff enjoyed the Runathon Kickoff on Friday where we gathered for the unveiling of the runathon video. Rhodie, our roadrunner mascot, made his appearance, along with a special lama friend. Students were encouraged to continue to grow in being “rooted in kindness” and to get involved in the Runathon by cheering, walking, running and/or raising funds to support the PTA. Red runathon packets were sent home with students with information about how you can support the PTA with their one fundraiser of the year.
Our 1st Quarter ends on Thursday, October 31 and students will be dismissed 2 hours early. Other upcoming changes to our schedule are:
- November 1, Holiday - no school
- November 4, School Planning Day - no school
- November 5, Teacher Workday - no school
- November 11, Holiday - no school
The end of the quarter is a great time to celebrate with your children their accomplishments of the 1st quarter and to discuss ways they can make the 2nd quarter even better. Teachers have been and continue to hold Parent/Teachers Conferences over the next few weeks. If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your child’s teacher, please reach out to schedule a time to touch base. Meeting early in the school year is a great way to ask questions and hear from the teacher about your child’s progress.
There is lots of good information below, please take a moment to go through it.
Have a great week!

Federal Impact Aid
The Impact Aid Program is a federal program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program relies on parents whose employment is on federally owned property in Virginia and can bring over $3 million to the Fairfax County School System. All parents are asked to complete the form regardless of their employment. The enrolling parent can do this on ParentVue. For more information, please watch this video: https://youtu.be/dwJCXpMB0EU.
Attendance Matters
We know there are a variety of days off over the next two months. Please, please work with us to assure your students are present for all the days we are in school!! Below are some tips that can make a difference in having regular attendance.
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine, making sure children get 9 to 11 hours of sleep.
- Make sure that when the lights go out, so do the cell phones, video games, and computers.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Touch base with teachers or administrators if you have questions or concerns about your child’s attendance.
- Set an example for your child. Show him or her that attendance matters to you and that you won’t allow an absence unless someone is truly sick.

Treat not Trash! Let’s Recycle our Wrappers!
For a third consecutive year, the MRES PTA will support a candy wrapper collection program. Bring your candy wrappers to school, and place them in the "Treat not Trash" bin in the lobby from November 6-15. The PTA will send the wrappers collected to be recycled. Please only bring in plastic candy wrappers (no cardboard, plastic baggies or food waste).
Don’t throw your pumpkins in the trash!
The PTA will collect pumpkins for composting on Wednesday, November 6 and Thursday November 7, 8:30-9:30 am. We will take your pumpkins from your car as you drive through the Kiss & Ride. You may also drop off your pumpkins to the compost bins outside the front entrance during the school day. Before you drop them off, please remove all decorations, such as paint, glitter, and candle wax as these materials cannot be composted. Why do we need to compost our pumpkins?
MRES Staff Spotlight
Ms. Rajesh, one of our Special Education teachers, has won the PTA priority parking spot for the week! This is her 8th year at MRES. She initially stepped in to fill in a short-term vacancy. Then she was asked to support Special Education students and found a path to pursue a second career quite different from her field of Economics & Human Resources. Ms. Rajesh loves supporting her students and their families. She commented: "I owe my growth to the MRES community (students, colleagues, families & admin team) for their encouragement & trust". She can fluently speak, read, and write 3 very distinctive regional languages of India apart from English and she enjoys what she does at Marshall Road!
