A Message from the Admin Team
Dear Little Run Family,
As the leaves begin to change color and the crisp autumn air fills the neighborhood, we hope you're enjoying this beautiful fall season.
We wanted to extend our sincere gratitude to our wonderful PTA for hosting the Roadrunner Games on Saturday. It was a fantastic day filled with fun, laughter, and friendly competition. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of the PTA volunteers and our teachers/staff who made the event a success.
Upcoming Event: Storybook Character Day
Get ready for a magical day on October 31 as we celebrate Storybook Character Day! Students and staff are invited to dress up as their favorite book characters. To ensure a safe and positive environment, we kindly ask that costumes avoid violent or frightening themes. Please refrain from using masks, weapons, or any items that may appear dangerous.
We encourage you to discuss this fun event with your child and explore their favorite book characters together. This is a great opportunity to bond over a good book and spark their imagination. Remember, a homemade costume is just as fun as a store-bought one!
Important Dates:
- October 31: Storybook Character Day (Early Release)
- November 1: No School (Holiday)
- November 4 & 5: No School (Teacher Work Days)
We look forward to seeing our Roadrunners dressed as their favorite book characters on October 31!

Little Run is a First Time Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School!
It is with great pleasure that we inform you that the Virginia Council on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children voted on October 21, 2024, to approve Little Run Elementary as a proud recipient of the School Year 2024-2025 Purple Star Award. This is a major accomplishment for our school.
Our students, staff, and families play such a huge role in ensuring a culture of belonging and support for our military-connected families. Our Student Ambassador Program and Military Kids Club is thriving here at Little Run, and we are excited to see what's to come!
We are also honored to be receiving the Challenge Coin from the Department of Defense in the next few weeks, a meaningful recognition rooted in the military tradition of presenting unit coins to individuals who have significantly contributed to the mission. This coin serves as a nod to our strong connection with the military community and our commitment to supporting military families. Both the award and the coin will be proudly displayed in our front office, serving as a symbol of our school’s dedication for all to admire. More about the history of the challenge coin can be found at The Challenge Coin Tradition: Do You Know How It Started? U.S. Department of Defense
We are honored to be part of such a caring and supportive community. We are grateful to serve the most amazing staff, students, and families, and this recognition is a testament to the strength of our collective efforts.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to the continued success of our amazing school.
Let's Welcome Our Newest Roadrunner!
Little Run's STEAM Lab
Ms. Scappucci’s class enjoyed some time using the STEAM Lab this week: Keva planks, Keva Bots, Legos and strategy games were popular choices!
Storybook Character Day - October 31
Join us for Storybook Character Day on October 31. Students and staff are welcome to dress up as their favorite book characters.
To support students’ feelings of safety and security in our building, violent or frightening character outfits are not acceptable. No masks, weapons, or dangerous-looking items will be permitted to accompany an outfit.
Please talk with your child about how they would like to participate in this event. This is an excellent opportunity to read a book together and to talk about the characters in the book and their role in the story. Having this discussion at home will support your student in sharing their character with their class. There is no need to buy a book character outfit. Just do your best to gather an assortment of hats, clothing, or other props to create a simple homemade character outfit.
We look forward to seeing our favorite book characters at school on October 31!
Fall Celebrations of the Joy of Books and Reading
On October 31, here at Little Run, we have a tradition of celebrating the love and joy of reading with Book Character Day! You can show off your favorite character from a book by dressing up like them. Get creative! It's okay if you have to tell a story to explain your idea. The more creative you are, the more you tell us about your favorite stories and love for reading. We'd love to see a variety of characters, creative choices, and representation from the various stories we share.
One more way to show your favorite book character: the Storybook Tissue Box decoration competition! We are starting a new tradition this year; we are trading pumpkins for tissue boxes. In the October 22 Tuesday folders, you will find the directions for the competition. Decorate a tissue box to represent your favorite storybook and storybook character(s). Tissues must be functional and accessible so we can enjoy and use these all year long. This will support joy, creativity, and stuffy noses hopefully through the spring! We look forward to a lot of entries! Due: November 12.
