When creativity meets measurement and intentional design, amazing things happen! Our 6th graders dove into a hands-on math project that brought the entire grade together for a fun and engaging experience. Union Mill Get2Green

abcde

The Get2Green program has started at Union Mill as part of the FCPS Zero Waste effort. Our Get2Green student team is led by sixth graders, Olivia C. and Ella K. We are working on earning our Eco Flag. One of the steps on our journey is to get recycling up and running here at UMES. Each classroom has received a blue recycling bin in which to collect used paper, post-its and cardboard. Once a week Green Team sixth graders will pick up the recycling from the larger pod recycling bins and take them to the large recycling container outside by the loading dock. Recycling requires everyone to be on board. Our sixth graders are researching recycling and making posters to help educate students and staff. Some of our second graders helped us make a video to show students what to recycle. We are striving to make a difference in the amount of paper we consume as well as recycling what we currently use.  Another Green Team/ Zero Waste commitment  this year is the Share Table.  Located in the school cafeteria, we have two refrigerators and a cart where unopened, prepackaged food and drinks can be left.  Any student can access the items so they are eaten instead of being thrown away. Students are learning about both of these programs through the morning news show and their classroom teachers.

If you have any questions, please contact Jenny Murray at jbmurray@fcps.edu or Ami Schroder at amschroder@fcps.edu.

Math and Science Night

We are excited to announce our upcoming Math and Science Night at Union Mill on November 12th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM! This event will be a fantastic opportunity for our students and their families to explore the wonders of math and science through engaging, hands-on activities.

To make this event a success, we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help facilitate the activities. Volunteer opportunities will begin at 5:00 and end at 7:30.

The best part? No prep is required! All materials will be provided by Mathnasium of Centreville and The Children's Science Center. Your role will simply involve guiding families through the various stations and ensuring everyone has a great time.
