What is Phonics?
Phonics is a method of teaching children the relationship between letters (or spelling patterns) and the sounds they represent. This understanding is essential for reading and spelling accurately.
Phonics: Unlocking the Code
Phonics teaches children that letters and sounds work like a code. Once they learn this code, they can unlock the ability to read and spell accurately.
Fun Phonics Activities to Try at Home
Reading Together
- Encourage your child to sound out unfamiliar words and blend the sounds to read them.
Letter and Sound Hunts
- Search for words around your home or neighborhood that start with or contain specific letters or sounds. Look through books, signs, or magazines!
Spelling and Word Building
- Use familiar words to practice spelling. Incorporate fun materials like colored pencils, crayons, or magnetic letters to keep it interesting.
Modeling
- Demonstrate how to read words by pronouncing each letter or spelling pattern and blending the sounds. Show how to break down words into sounds for spelling.
