Dear Shrevewood Families,
We are looking forward to welcoming our parents for our Parent Coffee next Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Library. Our counselors, Ms. Winston and Ms. Schoen, will be joining us to share about their role in the elementary school and to provide information about Second Step, a social-emotional learning program, that they are using in classrooms. You will also have the opportunity to meet and chat with our Assistant Principal, Mr. Reichard, and me about upcoming events, including parent-teacher conferences. As we continue to plan for future Parent Coffees, we would love to hear your ideas about topics you would like to discuss. Please fill out this one question Google Form to provide your input.
This week certainly feels more like fall. We’re getting excited for Book Character Day on the 31st, field trips for 6th grade, 1st grade, and our Enhanced Autism classes, and our next 3 hour early release Monday on the 28th. Families received an individualized email yesterday to confirm your child/ren’s dismissal plan. Any changes to that plan should be made by emailing Assistant Principal Dan Reichard (dlreichard@fcps.edu) no later than Thursday, October 24th.
Sincerely,
Katie Vandawalker, Principal
Dan Reichard, Assistant Principal

Friday, October 25, is Fall Picture Retake Day. Pictures will be taken of those students who were absent on September 13. If you wish to have your child's picture retaken, please send the original picture package to school with your child on October 25. He/she will need to provide it to the photographer in order to have his/her picture retaken.
Grades K-3: 10:00 a.m. - 10:40 a.m.
Grades 4-6: 3:00 p.m. - 3:40 p.m.
We invite all veterans and their families to join us for this meaningful event.
We would love to have veterans from our community come to Shrevewood to share their stories and experiences. Your voices are invaluable, and we believe our students can learn so much from your service. If you are interested in speaking, please let us know. If you are unable to attend but would still like to be part of our celebration, we invite you to share pictures of the veterans in your family.
Please send any photos you would like us to include, along with a brief description of your service, by filling out this Google Form or by contacting Kaylin Daniels via email (KLDaniels@fcps.edu) or Talking Points.
This assembly is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the sacrifices made by those who have served our country.
Due to limited space, we can only accommodate veterans and their immediate family at this time.
Thank you for your service, and we hope to see you there!

Next week, our school community will focus on the the character strength of creativity. Creative people are able to look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences and have an imaginative and independent thought process. They are able to generate different ideas and have the capacity to go after certain ideas they’ve generated with energy and enthusiasm. Creativity is a process that takes courage. Anytime you’re putting your original ideas into the world, you risk being criticized or even ostracized.
Creativity is associated with intrinsic motivation, meaning the process of creation is an end in itself. The work is not accomplished in order to receive an award. Creativity is also correlated with self-actualization, or fulfilling one’s talents and potential. Those with the strength of creativity have the urge to create, to build something new and original. The act of creation makes them happy.
On a group level, creativity is vital. It helps us solve seemingly impossible problems, create something we never knew we wanted, or simply see the world in a new way.
To practice and encourage creativity at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.

FCPS recognizes October as Disability History and Awareness Month. Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of individuals with disabilities, and the celebration of Disability History and Awareness Month is an opportunity to honor these diverse and important stories. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed three hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route. However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families. To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.
The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:
- September 23
- October 28
- December 9 (Changed from November 25)
- February 24
- March 17
- April 28
- May 19
Additional information can be found on the FCPS Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu.
Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your child’s well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.
Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.
Students, families, and staff throughout FCPS and in our school community will use Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as our learning management system. Here is what you need to know:
You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to log in to Schoology.
As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast will be $1.75. Lunch will be $3.25, milk $0.60. Money can be added to your child(ren)’s accounts using www.myschoolbucks.com. You may also write a check to Shrevewood Food Services and deliver it to our Food Services Manager. During the school year, you can find the menu for breakfast and lunch at https://linqconnect.com/public/menu/ESSF44.
Free and Reduced-Price Status
Students eligible for free or reduced-price meals will continue to receive these benefits through the end of September. A new application must be filled out each new school year. Forms are available online now: https://www.fcps.edu/frm. Applications are accepted at any time, but we encourage you to apply or renew your application before the end of September. Call (703) 813-4800 if you need help. This application must be completed for eligible students to receive free meals.
