Specials Spotlight
Library with Ms. Papas
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Graders have gotten to know their classmates and had the opportunity to check out books. They have learned about book care and being responsible users of the library. Kindergarteners have learned the parts of a book (front cover, back cover, spine, spine label) and the difference between a book that allows you to learn with your imagination (fiction) and a book that allows you to learn information (non-fiction). First graders have mapped the library to help remember how to locate their favorite books and discovered new interests. Second graders are working on developing a design to create a chair after reading I Am Not A Chair!
3rd, 4th and 5th Graders have gotten to know their classmates and had the opportunity to check out books. They have learned about library organization and gone on scavenger hunts in the library to locate books. Third graders have explored Destiny Discover, the online catalog system, and learned how to locate books using it. They also learned about the Dewey Decimal System and how that determines where non-fiction books are located in the library. Fourth and Fifth graders have had the opportunity to explore FCPS databases to locate information of interest to them or needed for class.

Pre-School Community Peers Opportunity
Columbia ES is pleased to announce that we will have community peers in our preschool program again this school year.
The program will invite a limited number of community preschoolers (1-2 per class), who are aged 3 ½ -5 years, to participate in our daily preschool activities. The children from the community will have the opportunity to make new friends and share experiences with current early childhood special education students.
Feel free to contact Ms. Tchinski (lmtchinski@fcps.edu) for further explanation of the program and if you are interested in participating. Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome, as we are all partners in this effort.
