Celebrating the Power of School Lunches
Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.
This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus.
Pictures can be ordered online (preferred method) at strawbridge.net using picture day ID FM449677. Students who were not in school on picture day will have another opportunity to have their photo taken during retakes.
For questions about photo orders, please visit strawbridge.net or contact Strawbridge at (866) 624-6229.
We will have an early dismissal on October 21, 2024, at 12:30 PM. To ensure a smooth transition, please reach out to your child's teacher beforehand to communicate your child's departure plans. This will help the teachers and administrative staff effectively coordinate dismissal. If your child is enrolled in SACC, they will receive a snack and then proceed to the program. The students that stay until 3:30 PM will be provided supplemental learning material. We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a seamless early dismissal for all students.

We would like to congratulate Ms. Zoe Jorgenson, our Strings Teacher, for being selected to perform at the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center at the end of the month (October 30th)! This is a FREE concert and will also be live-streamed and available on YouTube after the performance. We know she would love to see some Woodley Hills faces in the audience! This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to see one of their teachers performing at a prestigious venue.

Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events
Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.
When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.
Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.
All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

DATE CHANGE FOR TAKEOUT TUESDAY: OCTOBER 15
Plan ahead and don't cook! On October 15, Takeout Tuesday at Chalkboard Wings & BBQ will benefit the WHES Girls on the Run team. Mark your calendars! A portion of online sales (including gift cards) will be donated to the group! Also, Chalkboard will feature halal options!
Board Positions
Due to some movement at the beginning of the year, we have TWO board positions available. Please see below for brief descriptions and feel free to reach out to Caroline Cross (caroline.s.cross@gmail.com) for more information:
Fundraising - The Fundraising Coordinator is responsible for planning and managing the WHES PTA fundraising initiatives over the school year. They will work closely with the PTA President and principal to ensure that the cadence of fundraising is balanced in order to gather the amount of money needed to successfully operate the PTA and provide the community with high value events, while not overtaxing the students, parents and teachers. While we have a wide variety of past successful initiatives that we can pull from, it would be great if the Fundraising Coordinator can also search out successful opportunities from other schools.
Membership - The Membership Coordinator would work with the PTA President to discover ways to increase participation in the PTA. This could include organizing membership challenges between classrooms, incentives to increase teacher participation, and encouraging new kindergarten parents to join at the Spring kindergarten orientation. The Membership Coordinator would also be responsible for collecting membership forms and entering into our system to ensure that all members are accounted for and also receiving communications.
Join us for a fun and educational Spirit Week. Please see the details for each eventful day below.
