Welcome Back Again from a Long Weekend!
Dear Families,
We hope everyone who celebrates Yom Kippur had a solemn holiday with their family and wish all a bountiful autumn weekend full of good food, sports, outdoor exploration and everything pumkin! I enjoyed a trip to the Shenandoah National Park enjoying the beautiful array of colorful leaves and a trail to the waterfalls. It is always wonderful to get out and visit different places in Virginia.
This past week, our literacy core team visited many classrooms to see the new literacy curriculum in action at various grade levels. The literacy core team is comprised of the reading specialist, instructional coach, advanced academics teacher, an upper and primary teacher, ESOL teachers, special education teachers and administrators. The Virginia Literacy Act requires all schools to monitor the equitable access to literacy through weekly grade level collaborative learning team meetings and the classroom walk-throughs. At Sleepy Hollow, excellent literacy instruction will:
- Use high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) that is rooted in science-based reading research (SBRR) and best practices for evidence-based literacy instruction (EBLI).
- Utilize data to provide explicit instruction and targeted practice opportunities with foundational reading skills and structured phonics through core instruction.
- Engage students in using text evidence to make meaning from complex text, build vocabulary knowledge, and participate in writing and discussions to promote comprehension while reading.
- Ensure equitable opportunities for all students to do the cognitive work of each lesson and receive targeted support as needed.
Furthermore,we plan to build successful school, parent, caregiver, and community partnerships especially in relation to literacy development through events we have planned this school year.
- A Family Literacy Night
- Continue highlighting SHES literacy instructional practices in NYC to families
- Book Fair and Read-A-Thon event this year
- Sponsored Author Visits
- Parent Coffees
Thank you for your continued support of our school community.
In partnership,
Principal Vega and Assistant Principal Bermudez

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches
Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.
This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.
Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus.
PTA Family Trunk or Treat Event
Come join us on October 30th from 6-7:30 in the SHES parking lot for our

Student Interim Reports
An interim report highlighting your student's progress and areas of growth will be sent home midway of the first quarter to all families. Families should expect to receive the interim report by October 16. The purpose of the interim is to share your student's academic and life, work and citizen skills in the school setting.
As a reminder, please sign up for a parent-teacher conference with your student's teacher. You can reach your child's teacher by talking points or email. We encourage a strong partnership with our families in meeting the needs of all our students.
Friday, October 11th, will be an evening-only observance day for Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism. There is school that day, but important events will not occur after school. See the complete school year calendar.
In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.
