October is National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Students in various grades are learning characteristics of bullying and how they can help stop it.
- To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”
For more information on how FCPS handles a bullying situation please visit the FCPS Bullying Prevention and Intervention webpage. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and welcome at school. If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.

October Lunch Visitation Schedule
Parents/Caregivers are invited to join their student(s) for lunch at school on an assigned day. This is a great opportunity for parents/caregivers to come in for lunch with their child.
We encourage parents/caregivers to eat the same lunch as their child either packed or school lunch. We kindly ask that you do not bring fast food/outside lunch or candy. Also, parents please be advised that the bathrooms directly outside of the cafeteria are for student use only.
On the day of your child’s lunch, please arrive 5 minutes early so you can sign-in at the office and they will direct you to the cafeteria. Additionally, when you leave the school, please remember to check out in the office. If you choose to buy lunch from the cafeteria, adult pricing is $4.75 and may be paid in cash or by check. Click here for more information on purchasing lunch.
We ask that you please limit visitors to 1 caregiver, and no strollers please. We also ask that family members do not follow their child's class back to the classroom or outside for recess.
Please see below for the scheduled lunches by teacher:
Digital Citizenship Week!
We are excited to celebrate Digital Citizenship next week October 14th-18th! We look forward to seeing how our Bailey's Tigers join the fun!
Data-Driven School Based Mental Health Team Approach at Bailey’s
Fairfax County Public Schools has students in grades 3-12 participate in a Socio-Emotional Learning screener to have students reflect on their social-emotional skills and experiences at school; however, no method for collecting this data for K-2 students exists. Wanting to have a data-driven approach to identifying students in need of mental health support, the School Based Mental Health Team at Bailey’s ES created 4 questions to be asked of all students in K-2. Even though the district SEL screener is not used for students K-2, families are able to opt their child out of participation. Student opt-outs were used to respect the wishes of the adult caregivers and students opted-out of the district SEL screener were not given the school based SEL interview.
Questions were read to all students. For our Multi Language Learners (MLL), who speak Spanish, questions were read in Spanish. Students were also able to provide a non-verbal response by pointing to the picture for their response. One member of the Bailey’s ES School Mental Health Team (School Counselor, School Psychologist, or School Social Worker) met with each student 1-1 outside of the classroom with a hard copy of this questionnaire.
Beginning of the school year data showed:
-93.2% of all K-2 students who completed the questionnaire feel they are a part of their class family/part of their class
-94% of all K-2 students who completed the questionnaire have a teacher or adult they feel safe with at school
-94.9% of all K-2 students who completed the questionnaire have a friend in their class
If you have questions about this questionnaire or any concerns about your child, please reach out to a member of the Bailey’s School Based Mental Health Team.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School
Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.
Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit our website for information on when to keep your child at home.
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events
Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.
When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.
Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!
