Thoreau Matters October 11, 2024

Dear Thoreau Families,

We're excited to share some photos below showcasing the dynamic learning experiences happening in our classrooms! Our dedicated teachers are fostering a love of learning in our students.

The parent cell phone survey closes today! If you haven't yet, please take a moment to complete the survey by clicking the link you received in the email on September 30th. You can also find more information here.

FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Learn more about online tutoring with Varsity Tutors.

Veterans Day is a time to recognize the courage and sacrifice of those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Students play an important role in expressing our gratitude. If you have a family member you'd like to honor, we invite you to participate in our Veterans Day display. Print out a copy of the form (available at the main office or on the announcement page of the Thoreau website) and complete it with information about your veteran. Please include a photo (photocopy preferred) as well. These forms will be displayed in the school hallway to remind us of the importance of honoring those who served. If you have more than one family member you'd like to honor, please feel free to make copies of the form. All forms with pictures should be submitted to the Thoreau main office by Wednesday, November 6. You may also attach the completed form with photo by emailing them to rranderson1@fcps.edu

Have a wonderful weekend,

Lightspeed Parent Controls Now Available!

We are pleased to announce that Lightspeed Parent Controls are now available! This feature helps parents stay informed about their child’s online activity while using an FCPS device. You can learn more about it here: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/lightspeed-parent-reports

Parents receive Weekly Parent Reports directly from Lightspeed, summarizing the websites their child visited over the weekend. At the bottom of each report, there is an option to register for the Parent Relay Portal, which offers more detailed browsing information.

With this extended access, parents can also pause internet access on their child’s FCPS laptop during non-school hours, such as dinner or bedtime. Please note, this feature is not available during the school day. Everything is managed through the Lightspeed report—no additional IT support or submissions are needed.

Take advantage of this great tool today!

THOREAU AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

After-School is an amazing opportunity for our staff & students to connect outside of the normal school day hours! Students & staff are coming up with some really creative clubs to kick off this exciting school year. After-School clubs & late buses will continue to occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between the hours of 2:25pm - 4:45pm throughout the school year!

Check out all of the after-school information linked below!

Please have your student access these links using their FCPS Google account!

Weekly After-School Club Schedule – this is the club schedule for the week of October 14th – October 18th. The weekly club schedule is updated weekly since clubs are always being added as they are created by students and Thoreau staff. Club Descriptions – learn a little bit more about what each particular club is and what they will be offering to the students.

Late Bus Routes/Stops – help your child find their late bus stop. Late buses depart from Thoreau on Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 4:30pm-5pm only!

Social Studies Basal Resources Review

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.

All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 5: Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts. Our final goal is Leading for Tomorrow’s Innovation. We are preparing our students for a future that has yet to be imagined. We must give them the skills they will need to succeed. Watch this video to see students exploring and preparing for careers through Career and Technical Experience programs.
