October 16th Family Newsletter
Dear Union Mill Families,
It is hard to believe it is already mid-October. Our staff have continued to engage our students with opportunities to develop their communication and collaboration skills across content areas.
We have several exciting events coming up in the next month to connect our students, families and community. Please take a moment to check out some of the events and sign up to volunteer if you are available.

Celebrating Our Armed Forces
UMES PE wants to celebrate our service people! Please share a photo, in uniform if possible, with a brief description of you or your loved ones who have or are currently serving in our armed forces. This will go on our “Union Mill is Thankful for our Service People” bulletin board (November). All pictures and submissions should be sent no later than Tuesday October 29 to Manda Tirado at mktirado@fcps.edu.
Need an example of what we would love to see?:
Captain William Tirado (O-6), Intelligence Officer. Captain Tirado served in the US Navy from 1964-1993. He is Mrs. Tirado's father-in-law.
DID YOU KNOW…?
While physical activity and education has its history in Ancient Greece, PE in US public schools was introduced as a necessary part of the school day after the American Civil Wars to maintain fitness and health standards of the youth.

Family Fitness is Back!
Family Fitness is starting soon! We will meet in the gym once a quarter from 3:45-4:45pm to move, play, and learn together. Students, bring a grown-up and join us on Thursday, October 24, for our first gathering. Families will get to go through the Journey to the Great Pumpkin obstacle course before we play outside.

Fall Family Cookout
We look forward to hosting families for an opportunity to connect on Thursday, October 31st during their child's lunch. Families will have the opportunity to come and eat with their child in the cafeteria or outside on Union Mill school grounds. If you choose to attend, please click here to RSVP by Friday, October 25th. This will ensure we have enough food for all who attend. While we are excited to include families in this event, we ask no more than 2 people per child attend.
The menu includes: Grilled 100% all beef hot dog, chips, light snacks and water. There is no cost for the event thank you to ML Real Estate.

Gently Used Board Books
The UMES Library is looking for donations of gently used board books. If you are cleaning out your child’s room, please consider donating them to the UMES library! All board books should be delivered to the library. Thank you!

October 25th Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness
Our next Sprit Day is Friday, October 25th for Breast Cancer Awareness. Thank you to the Union Mill SCA for advocating for and planning this day.
Math and Science Night
We are excited to announce our upcoming Math and Science Night at Union Mill on November 12th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM! This event will be a fantastic opportunity for our students and their families to explore the wonders of math and science through engaging, hands-on activities.
To make this event a success, we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help facilitate the activities. Volunteer opportunities will begin at 5:00 and end at 7:30.
The best part? No prep is required! All materials will be provided by Mathnasium of Centreville and The Children's Science Center. Your role will simply involve guiding families through the various stations and ensuring everyone has a great time.

 It's time to order your 2024-2025 yearbook! Families may place orders at www.buytheyearbook.com (with school ID# 725178) or use the QR code below. Yearbooks are $15.70 each.
Don't miss your chance to order this year’s yearbook! There will not be extras available at the end of the year.
The deadline to order is April 22, 2025.
Early Release Mondays
An eNotify message was sent to families on Wednesday, October 9th to confirm your current childcare option for our next early release on Monday, October 28th. If you need to update your preference, please complete the form included in the letter. This will allow us to plan for staffing and student safety for our next early release.
As a reminder, the Centreville Pyramid, which includes Union Mill Elementary, will have the following three-hour early release days. On these days, students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.

Union Mill PTA
Membership
PTA Memberships are only good for one year. Members get PTA information first, discounts and benefits at PTA-sponsored events, and are the first to know about volunteer opportunities at the school!
Why Join?
Membership is only $15/year for a family and $7.50/year for an individual or staff member and shows you value our school community - students, staff and your fellow parents and caregivers. Tickets now available for Family Paint Night - October 18
Registration is now open for our next Union Mill Family Paint Night hosted by Union Mill Elementary School PTA and The Purple Hayes Gallery on Friday, October 18 in the cafeteria from 5:00-7:00 pm.
Ticket includes canvas and all art supplies needed to create a fall-themed painting, instruction from local, professional artist Rebecca Hayes (owner of The Purple Hayes Gallery), and pizza dinner.

One (1) ticket per person attending is required (to paint and eat dinner). Parents may choose to accompany their child but must purchase a ticket for themselves as well if they also plan to participate. If they just want to stay and watch that's ok! Hearing & Vision Screening Volunteers Needed - Friday, October 25
Our wonderful School Health Team needs adult volunteers during the day on Friday, October 25 to help with hearing and vision screening of our students.
