Principal's Message

Dear Shrevewood Families,

We'd like to express our gratitude to everyone who joined our PTA Meeting last week. It was a pleasure to see so many engaged families. Our Reading Specialist, Ms. Senick, delivered a fantastic presentation on Benchmark Advance, our new language arts curriculum in FCPS. She provided valuable insights and helpful resources for families to support their children's reading development. If you missed the presentation or would like to revisit it, you can access the presentation here.

We're actively seeking someone to to fill our Dining Assistant position at Shrevewood. This is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on our school community. If you know someone who might be interested, please encourage them to email me at kmvandawalke@fcps.edu.

Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow is Pajama Day to kick off our Digitial Citizenship Spirit Week! Lastly, staff will be participating in a Staff Development Day on Monday, October 14. Schools will be closed for students on that day.

We appreciate your continued partnership and support. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or need anything. We're always here to help!

Sincerely,

Katie Vandawalker, Principal

Dan Reichard, Assistant Principal

Partnership with Davis Career Center

davis

We are excited to announce that we are partnering with staff and students at the FCPS Davis Career Center (DCC) this school year. DCC is where motivated and talented special education students have the opportunity to build their independence and thrive within their communities. Every day from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., the DCC students volunteer with valued community business partners, and this school year they will be volunteering at Shrevewood on Thursdays and Fridays starting next week. This helps their students to prepare them for a more robust and meaningful adult life after FCPS! Students also learn to take public transportation, money management, independent living skills, and more. DCC supports students ages 18-22 from over 15 FCPS schools. Welcome to our DCC staff and students!

Veteran’s Assembly on Wednesday, November 13th

Grades K-3 10:00 a.m. - 10:40 a.m.

Grades 4-6 3:00 p.m. - 3:40 p.m.

We invite all veterans and their families to join us for this meaningful event.

We would love to have veterans from our community come and share their stories and experiences. Your voices are invaluable, and we believe our students can learn so much from your service. If you are interested in speaking, please let us know. If you are unable to attend but would still like to be part of our celebration, we invite you to share your pictures of the veterans in your family.

Please send any photos you'd like us to include, along with a brief description of your service by filling out the Google Form or contact Kaylin Daniels via email (KLDaniels@fcps.edu) or talking points.

This assembly is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the sacrifices made by those who have served our country.

Due to limited space, we can only accommodate Veterans and their family at this time.

Thank you for your service, and we hope to see you there!

Disability History and Awareness Month

dham

FCPS recognizes October as Disability History and Awareness Month.  Students deserve meaningful, sustained opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of individuals with disabilities, and the celebration of Disability History and Awareness Month is an opportunity to honor these diverse and important stories. Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Save the Date - Thanksgiving Luncheon

We are looking forward to our Thanksgiving Luncheon with families at Shrevewood E.S. on Thursday, November 21! Please save the date, and stay tuned for additional details.

Attendance

Our goal is to partner with families to help minimize the number of days students are absent. Getting your student into the habit of daily attendance helps reduce stress and makes it easier to connect with friends and teachers. We understand that each year presents different extenuating circumstances that lead to missed days. However, we hope to increase communication in regards to absences to reduce impact on your child’s well-being. FCPS has created a Health Flyer for Parents indicating when a parent should keep their child home from school. Please review FCPS Attendance Policies and resources to encourage regular school attendance.

Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, parents/legal guardians can report up to two consecutive absences through SIS ParentVUE. Learn more about attendance reporting through ParentVUE HERE. Families can also report absences by emailing shrevewoodelem.attendance@fcps.edu or calling 703-645-6666 before 10:00 a.m. each day.

Schoology/ParentVUE

Students, families, and staff throughout FCPS and in our school community will use Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as our learning management system. Here is what you need to know:

You need a SIS/ParentVUE account to log in to Schoology.

Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed three hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 23
  • October 28
  • December 9 (Changed from November 25)
  • February 24
  • March 17
  • April 28
  • May 19

Additional information can be found on the FCPS Early Release Mondays webpage. If you have immediate questions, please email ESPlanning@fcps.edu

Student Birthday Policy

As an administrative team and school, we will be recognizing and honoring our students' birthdays monthly. For the safety of all students and staff in our building and to limit the amount of classroom disruptions, please do not send in food or toys for your child's birthday.

The Positivity Project

p2 shield

Next week, our school community will focus on the  the character strength of integrity.  Integrity means you are honest and speak the truth. You
present yourself genuinely and sincerely.

Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs.

Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People
with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

To practice and encourage integrity at home, please visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.
