Message from Mr. Greata
With homecoming on the horizon, Carter G. Woodson High School is gearing up for a busy schedule filled with events and celebrations for our students. This past week, we celebrated our senior athletes from both the girls' volleyball and cross-country teams. Additionally, our coed golf team was the runner up in the regional tournament, sending the entire team to the state tournament this upcoming Tuesday for the first time in over 30 years. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes!
Next Monday, October 14th, is Indigenous People’s Day and a student holiday. Even though there will be no classes, we hope to see lots of students at our Powerpuff games starting at 6:00 pm, followed immediately by our homecoming bonfire—a long-standing tradition at Carter G. Woodson High School.
With the student holiday on Monday, Homecoming Spirit Week kicked off today with team jersey/hat day and will continue next Tuesday. Check out our Kiosk for all the details! We hope to see you on Friday at the parade, pig out, and game. Be sure to wear your red, white, and blue! Students can purchase tickets to the Saturday homecoming dance during lunches for $25. This year’s homecoming theme is City Lights on Hoco Night.
I would like to personally invite everyone to join us on October 23rd at 5:00 pm for the Carter G. Woodson High School Rededication Ceremony. Our mural in the front vestibule was painted this week, and we are excited to share not only this beautiful art with you, but also a night of student work and reflection, special guests, and community celebration. Please join us, and use the RSVP link to let us know you’re coming.
On the academic front, the first quarter will end on October 31st. Now is a great time to check with your student and ensure they have a good plan for a strong finish to the 1st quarter!
Have a great long weekend, and for those that are observing Yom Kippur, may you have an easy fast!

Academic Screening and Growth Tests
FCPS uses the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth assessments to determine students’ strengths and needs in mathematics and reading. Students in select high school math and English courses will participate in these tests. Test results help families and teachers know how to support each student’s learning and development. The Academic Screening, Growth, and Diagnostic Tests webpage provides more information on these tests.
- MAP Growth Reading - students in select English courses
- MAP Growth Math – students in select math courses
English and math teachers use MAP Growth assessments in the fall with all students in the select courses. Some students may retest in winter and spring to provide additional growth data. Tests are delivered within the classroom instructional block. Teachers set specific testing dates for each class. General timing for required screening and growth is available on the Grade Level Tests webpage.
Based on academic screening results, some students may require a reading or math intervention plan. If you have questions about academic screening or growth tests, please contact your student’s English or mathematics teacher.
This weeks Cav Kudos student winners. Keep up the kindness, Woodson!
