Message from Principal Burke

Good afternoon, Edison Eagles!

We’ve had a great week and have a lot to look forward to! First, a huge congratulations to Ethan Love for advancing to the golf state championship! We are incredibly proud of his hard work and dedication, and we wish him the best of luck as he competes at the state level next week.

A big thank you to everyone who came out for our Feeder Night and the Deck Victory Bowl. It was heartwarming to see our future Eagles and our community come together to honor our colleague and friend. Your support means the world to the Deck family and us.

We also celebrated our boys' volleyball seniors at their Senior Night this week. It’s been wonderful watching this program take root, and I want to personally thank our seniors for their leadership in starting the program and building a solid foundation for future growth.

On Wednesday, we celebrated our IB Middle Years specialist, Corinne Nuttall, at the FCPS Excellence Awards. Her group was recognized for their outstanding work aligning our IB Approaches To Learning skills with the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate attributes, a vital part of our students’ holistic development. We are so proud of her and this well-deserved recognition.

Last night, we played Hayfield in football. While we didn’t come away with a win, I was incredibly proud of our players and coaches for competing with grace and grit. A huge thank you to our fans for their positive energy and support—you continue to demonstrate what it means to be an Edison Eagle!

A reminder: there will be no school for students on Monday due to a professional development day for teachers.

Finally, Homecoming Week is here! Let’s make it a week to remember by getting involved. Please encourage your students to participate in our dress-up days and join us for the pep rally on Friday. And don’t forget to come out to our Homecoming festivities, including the Eagle Bowl, Follies, and, of course, our big football game. We look forward to seeing the whole community come together to celebrate Edison pride!

Have a wonderful weekend, and let’s get ready for an amazing Homecoming Week!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Amanda Burke
Principal

Five Edison seniors are delivering STEM education to elementary school kids in Maryland

Five seniors who graduated from Edison's Global STEM Challenges Program (GSCP) last year are determined to bring STEM education to underprivileged kids. Layla Lahlou, Victoria Bujoreanu, Cameron Hui, Branson Wood, and Connor Marshall worked to adapt their GSCP projects, to be able to offer engaging, hand-on workshops to younger kids.

Our Edison students have partnered with Catherine T Reed Elementary School, a Title I school in Prince George’s County, to offer first STEM workshop in the spring of 2024 to over 75 students in 5th grade. The teachers had never seen the kids so excited to learn, and immediately invited our seniors to come back.

This month, instead of taking time off during the recent school holidays on October 3rd and 4th, our STEM-Gen seniors went back to Reed Elementary once again and ran a series of fun workshops focused on water filtration. This time, they taught it to over 150 kids in 4th and 5th grade.

STEM Gen team has already secured dates for running more workshops at Reed in January, and April 2025, with the aim to reach over 300 by the end of the school year. Additionally, STEM Gen has partnered with Charles E. Beatley Public Library, to further extend their reach with another STEM workshop planned for March.

We are very proud that our kids find time to volunteer even during such busy times with early action college applications due in less than a month.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches

Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.

This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

Want to know what’s for breakfast or lunch? Nutrition Services now has printable menus

Edison Band visited Springfield Estates Elementary School and Bren Mar Park Elementary School Friday morning.  Both schools faculty were amazingly receptive and helpful and both student populations were very engaged by singing along, clapping and asking our band students questions about High School Band!

No-Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Their therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students may be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect families with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.
